Droylsden couple's winter wonderland brings joy to children

A Droylsden family have once again transformed their home into a winter wonderland to spread festive joy and raise money for charity.

Susan Farkas and her partner John Charlesworth decked the halls and covered their home in lights to create their own 'Santa's Grotto' to welcome children from the local area.

John's shed became Santa's workshop, where Father Christmas would talk to the children before donating a gift to them.

It's all to raise money for Kidscan, a charity that is close to both Sue and John's hearts.

It's the couple's second year of running the Santa Grotto and this year they saw more than 400 children, spreading some much-needed Christmas cheer.

However, they were keen to point out that it was a team effort, with the Droylsden community volunteering their time to wrap presents, book in children and entertain the little ones.

Local businesses also donated prizes that would be raffled off for extra funds.

Neighbours and friends Claire Heeney, Caitlin Morgan and Laura Keenan all pitched in to help the grotto run smoothly.

Mrs Claus, or Sue to her friends, told the Reporter: "We sat down and had a chat about what else we could do this year and said about doing a raffle.

"We had lots of prizes donated including a bar tab at the Buxton, meals at Industry and hot tub hire for the weekend."

John (Father Christmas) added: "It's been crazy but successful. We've had people visiting from all over Manchester this time.

"There's still children that haven't been able to have a normal life this year and we just want to show them a good time.

"We're a team in Droylsden and everyone works together - it's not just about one person."

Caitlin Morgan was dressed as Minnie Mouse to meet the children.

She said: "I've really enjoyed it because, as John says, it's being a part of the community and everyone gets stuck in."

Laura Keenan, who expertly played the part of Head Elf, added: "We're great friends. It's nice to help the community and when everyone pulls together and it's for a wonderful charity as well."

Both John and Sue are long-time supporters of Kidscan.

John said: "It's close to a lot of people's hearts around us. The money goes into something and it means we can help.

"It might not be massive to some people but it's massive for us. All the money is going to them to help the work they do."
