Dogs Trust reassure owners over coronavirus transmission

Dogs Trust has issued advice to reassure owners about coronavirus transmission and dogs following widespread media coverage last week.

To date there are currently no confirmed cases of the coronavirus (Covid-19) being transmitted from dogs to people.

However, just like human hands, it is possible for dogs to carry the virus on their fur, their collar and lead.

As lockdown is eased, there are naturally more opportunities for people to interact with people and their pets.

The charity, which has a rehoming centre in Denton, is advising owners that there is little risk of the disease being transmitted from a dog to them, but to follow simple steps to help protect themselves and others.

Advice includes washing hands, avoiding contact with other pets, not allowing other people to pet your dog and ideally keeping your dog on a lead when out walking.
