Denton pub facing review after ‘stabbing and glassing’

Police have called for a Tameside pub to have its licence reviewed after a ‘large scale disturbance’ involving punters who saw a man ‘stabbed’ in the back and another ‘glassed’ over the head.

The Angel Hotel in Denton is facing a hearing at the town hall to determine whether it can keep its licence after officers were called to a violent fracas in the street outside the venue.

A spokesperson for Ei Publican Partnerships, the company that leases out the pub on Hyde Road, said it has been ‘temporarily closed’ while they work with local authorities ahead of the review on August 5.

In its submission to Tameside council, GMP say that patrons who were in the pub on the night of Friday, June 7, spilled out of the doorway and into the street.

A 999 call was received at around 10.55pm from officers by someone who said that ‘two to three knives’ had been seen.
Documents seen by the Local Democracy Reporting Service state that during this altercation a man was assaulted, leaving him with a ‘laceration to his back’ which was six inches long and one inch deep.

He also received a ‘puncture wound to his left eye’ and sustained a blow to the head with an ‘unknown instrument’.

During the same fight, another man was also assaulted and received a head wound as a result of being ‘hit with a glass’, according to the documents.

He sustained a cut to the ear, two ‘puncture wounds’ to his right arm and a laceration to the back which was around two thirds of an inch long. Both men’s injuries are being investigated by police as grievous bodily harm assaults.

GMP say that the current premises licence holder (PLH) and designated premises supervisor (DPS) have not upheld the licensing objectives of their licence – specifically the prevention of crime and disorder, and public safety.  Neither was at the pub when the disturbance occurred.

Mike Robinson, licensing manager at Tameside council, said: “On June 12 an application was received from GMP following an incident that had occurred at the premises on June 7, which involved a fight that spilled out onto the carriageway and there were reports of people being glassed and stabbed outside the premises.”

A meeting took place at The Angel on June 10 between police and the premises licence holder. In their submission, GMP say he ‘failed to take any responsibility for the two Section 18 assaults, claiming that the incidents occurred outside and off the premises’.

The police licensing officer suggested a number of proposals for the pub which would ‘minimise the risk’ of similar incidents occurring again. These included barring customers under the age of 21, having approved door staff working Friday to Sunday from 8pm until 30 minutes after closing time – and having the use of a metal detector wand. They also suggested plastic glasses should be used ‘on and off’ the premises at all times, and alcohol should stopped being served at 11.30pm, with the pub closing at midnight.

The premises licence holder ‘dismissed the proposals as unachievable’, according to the report. However he suggested voluntary steps, including enrolling three staff on a drug awareness course, retraining staff on Challenge 25 and refusal to serve, a floor manager to collect glasses and Security Industry Authority door staff to work every Friday and Saturday.

But in their submission, the GMP licensing officer stated: “I believe that these voluntary proposals fall short of what is necessary and proportionate in evidencing the commitment and responsibility of the PLH and the DPS to reduce crime and disorder and improve public safety.”

A spokesperson for Ei Publican Partnerships, the company that leases out the pub, said: “We are aware of this incident and the pub remains temporarily closed while we work alongside the local authorities with their investigation.

“We aim to reopen the pub as soon as possible for the benefit of the local community.”
