Denton Crysant's Ken Harrop is pick of the bunch once again

It’s been yet another successful daffodil season for Denton’s Ken Harrop.

He won no less than 11 awards at the National Daffodil Society Show in Worcester in April, coming out on top in every category he entered.

Among the prizes was the Cartwright Challenge Cup, one of the most coveted prizes for bulb growers, with Ken taking it home for the third time.

It cemented Ken’s reputation as one of the best in the country at growing daffodils, which he’s been doing for around 13 years now.

He and the team at Denton & District Chrysanthemum and Dahlia Society grow around 3,000 bulbs every year and 200 different varieties.

They are currently working on hanging baskets and bedding plants, which they sell every Saturday and Sunday, from 9am-2pm at Wilton allotments, just off Manchester Road.

Then, attention turns to chrysanthemum season in September, which the society has had huge success with in recent years.

President of the Denton and District Chrysanthemum and Dahlia Society, Cllr Dawson Lane, said: “It’s fantastic for Denton and for Tameside.

“It’s a pleasure to be resident because they are great lads and they work very hard.”
