Denton Community College's 'Ton of Love' for pyjama appeal

Denton Community College has donated a ‘ton of love’ by collecting more than 100 pairs of pyjamas for a children’s hospital appeal.

The Children’s Hospital Pyjamas charity was officially presented with the pyjamas at the college last week.

The donation is part of a larger appeal throughout Greater Manchester, with collections ending on December 8.

Founded by a parent whose daughter was an in-patient, the charity began as a toy collection, before they found that hospitals were in short supply of pyjamas for children to wear instead of hospital gowns.

MP for Denton and Reddish Andrew Gwynne met the charity’s Manchester Area Co-ordinator Julie Bell, who is from Haughton Green, at the college to present her with a certificate of thanks.

“Julie was overwhelmed with people donating from across the nine towns of the borough and it’s been such a great success,” he said.

“It’s just really captured the minds of so many people during this pandemic that we can do something positive for the wider community,” the MP added.

Julie said they have received 600 pairs of pyjamas for the appeal to date, with donations from individuals, schools, and supermarkets.

“We have two collection points at the moment, that’s Morrisons in Bredbury and St Anne’s Roman Catholic Church in Ashton.

“We are in need of teenage sizes at the moment, from age 11 up to 18 years of age, in small, medium and large,” she explained.

Anyone looking to donate pyjamas must ensure they are brand new and sealed, but not wrapped.

Christmas pyjamas are to be avoided, as the pyjamas will be used all year round, and fleecey fabrics are too hot for the warm wards.

The pyjamas donated to the charity are gifted to establishments up and down the country.

These include hospitals, children’s hospices, women’s refuges, children’s hospital at home teams and occasionally food banks.

Tameside Hospital, Stepping Hill, Manchester Royal Children’s Hospital, Manchester Royal Infirmary and Ronald McDonald House Manchester have all benefitted from the donations.

Children can end up in hospital for a multitude of reasons and often without pyjamas to wear, especially in the case of emergencies.

Jule added: “The stories we have had from families who have received our donations are truly humbling and we know all the hard work we put in to run these appeals is worth it.”

There is still time to donate at the collection points or you can find out more about the appeal at https://www.childrenshospitalpyjamas.co.uk/
