Dave Sweetmore column: Magical music of Jen Dixon

Tameside Radio presenter Dave Sweetmore profiles solo artist Jen Dixon, who is releasing a new track, ahead of her appearance on his show on Monday.

Residing in a beautiful part of the North East, with a home studio overlooking the North Sea, it’s inevitable there will always be something magical about the music of Jen Dixon (pictured).

Being brought up in a family of mixed musical influences, her father was an Elvis fan and her mother was a Bay City Rollers fan. Jen openly admits her first ever concert was pop band Steps.

She started having drum lessons at the age of 11, also learning other instruments along the way.

Finding her own musical path as she grew older and went to university, her musical direction started changing to the cooler sounds of Foo Fighters, Alt J, and Arctic Monkeys.

By this point it was clear to Jen that a life of music was what she aimed for.

Jen became a full time drummer for respected and successful local musician Corey Bowen, and then eventually started appearing at many venues and open mic nights in her own right.

In March 2020 came the Covid-19 pandemic and lockdowns. Jen knew this was the time to become creative, concentrate on her own solo career, and build up a fanbase much more widespread, writing some amazing music along the way.

One recent review compared her to Dido. A great compliment, but personally, I think she’s Jen Dixon. With a unique style and sound of her own, she released her debut single ‘Falling into You’ last year.

A follow up single ‘Why Did We Crash?’ was released in January, and this weekend she releases her brilliant new track ‘Which Way Is Down?’.

At a time where new music is as good as it’s ever been, with a great amount of solo female artists, Jen Dixon is up there with the best.

I’m hoping an album and tour will be on it’s way, we’ll try and find out when she joins me on my Tameside Radio show this Monday from 7pm.

You can listen to Dave on Tameside Radio 103.6FM on Monday evenings from 7pm to 9pm. Click here to subscribe and catch up on previous shows.
