Dave Sweetmore column: Cometh the hour cometh the man

Dave Sweetmore - whose show you can hear on Tameside Radio every Monday from 7pm - profiles a Greater Manchester band to watch out for in his latest column...

The new music scene in the North West is the best it’s been for a very long time, which for music lovers and bands together is brilliant.

So to be named one of the ‘bands of the year to watch out for’ by reviewers is probably a harder feat than ever.

But for Wigan-based band Flechettes (pictured), that’s not been a problem, as they seem to appear on them all.

I’ve known founding member and frontman Jack Heaton for a few years now, since he was an established solo artist performing in his own right and before forming the band, and last week on my Tameside Radio show it was as apparent as ever why music fans and fellow musicians are right behind his latest project ‘Flechettes’.

Heaton, along with guitarist Johnny Raper, bassist Will Watts, and drummer Nicholas Kitts, release their latest single ‘Man Of The Hour’ today (Friday), and both the lead track and flip side ‘Solitude’ have already been receiving a huge amount of radio play.

Through the pandemic, the lads have kept their social media presence high, something which is ‘as important as anything else’ to the band’s lovable frontman, and they were also one of the highlights of Manchester’s only live music festival last year, ‘MM FEST’.

They also released two EPs in 2020, ‘In The Mood’, and ‘Chasing Youth’, and have recently become one of only a handful of bands to appear on the ‘Big In 2021’ limited edition vinyl LP put together by legendary live music promoters ‘This Feeling’.

A tour has been announced for later in the year, where they will play at Manchester’s ‘Off The Square’ on Saturday, October 2 (tickets are on sale now), and another new single is due for release before summer.

Flechettes are not only a great live band with great recorded music, and a top set of lads, they are also one of the hardest working, passionate, and dedicated bands you could meet.

Check them out. Long Live Flechettes.

You can tune into Dave Sweetmore every Monday at 7pm on Tameside Radio 103.6FM.
