Dane Bank Green Space has officially opened

Celebration: MP Andrew Gwynne does the honours to cut the ribbon and declare the space officially open.

Denton MP Andrew Gwynne did the honours as he cut a ribbon to declare Dane Bank Green Space 'officially' open.

The event at the green space off Windsor Road last Saturday (30 July) was held to celebrate the start of the nature zone being officially ‘open’ to the public for the first time in more than 50 years.

It was also an opportunity to showcase the work that has been undertaken to create an accessible and educational space following funding from the Big Lottery and Postcode Lottery.

Amanda Jones, who organised the event, said: “It was a brilliant day and I would like to thank everyone who came to the green space event.

“I’d especially like to thank Andrew Gwynne MP for doing the opening honours of cutting the ribbon and for the support of our local ward councillors.

“We couldn’t have done all this without the support of the local community and it was lovely to see everyone finally get to enjoy the green space after so long.

“The day was a celebration of the opening of a green space that has been developed by the community for the community. It is now a true community asset.

“The DBGS Charity now look forward to implementing Phase 2 plans which will see a funding application to the National Lottery to build a Lodge on site, providing a whole host of activities and classes on wildlife, biodiversity and ecology, to name but a few - exciting times ahead!”

The Phase 1A improvements now completed include a new entrance and gate and circular footpath that leads onto the field and continues all around the field and the new parking spaces - ensuring disabled vehicle access.

On the day visitors could enjoy Forest School trails, outdoor yoga, a bouncy castle, nature trails, face painting, an ice cream van, tombola, refreshments and teddy bears picnics.

The group was originally created following a meeting to discuss a potential development of land in Dane Bank, particularly the area off Windsor Road around the ponds and cricket club.

The green space was saved from becoming a housing development, with the group securing Big Lottery and Postcode Lottery ‘seed’ funding, plus planning permission for car parking at the Windsor Road Fields site.
