Daisy Dewsnap: Staying motivated and getting ahead

Daisy Dewsnap, a 15-year-old aspiring journalist from Mossley who attends Saddleworth School, writes for the Reporter. This week, she recommends some tips to motivate yourself and avoid getting distracted...

It’s so easy to get distracted when you’re studying or working nowadays. We have our phones, Netflix, laptops, music, YouTube… it’s so simple to get side tracked and start a separate task.

For this article, I’ll be outlining some tips to motivate yourself and avoid procrastination or getting distracted. There are lots of different techniques you can try!

The first thing you can do is plan out your time and split it into time frames.

This way, you will be able to work with a routine or schedule which should make it easier to keep up with the tasks and follow the most productive day possible.

This will also prevent you from being distracted because you will be working to a strict time limit for each task so have no time to get side-tracked.

Something else you can do is to use incentives. Even if these are the smallest things, make sure you use some of these.

Have something to look forward to afterwards and this will encourage you to get each task done as it will motivate you much more if you’re working towards something!

The third thing you can do is tell other people what you are hoping to achieve.

This will mean that you’re held accountable for it and you will be responsible for completing it. You can’t back out as you’ve already let others know what you’re wanting to get done.

Another thing you can do is focus on ‘why’.

This is something that really helps to motivate me because if you understand why it is that you’re doing it, this should encourage you to finish it as it takes you a step closer to your goals.

Everyone loses motivation sometimes and have days when they are not productive at all, but hopefully these four steps should help to regain this motivation to complete those tasks you’ve been procrastinating.

It is also worth bearing in mind that it is completely necessary to have days when you rest and give yourself a break. This is something that goes without saying.
