Daisy Dewsnap reviews Black Butterfly on Netflix

Fifteen-year-old Daisy, who lives in Mossley and attends Saddleworth School, writes for the Reporter and Chronicle...

You won’t find the film Black Butterfly on at the cinema - but you will find it on Netflix.

In the film, a reclusive writer struggles to start what he hopes will be a career-saving screenplay.

After a tense encounter with a drifter, author Paul offers him a place to stay. But things aren’t as they seem and there may be more to his new housemate than meets the eye.

As a storm cuts off power to the isolated cabin, Paul finds himself locked in a battle of both wits and survival.

The film is actually a re-make of the French film ‘Papillon Noir’ but was adapted for this English version.

From the beginning, the enthralling plotline will draw you in with all of its twists and turns. I couldn’t take my eyes off the screen and was desperate to know what would happen next.

I enjoyed this movie from beginning to end and thought it was very well thought out, leaving me with so many questions and theories after it had finished.

The main characters are played by Antonio Banderas and Jonathan Rhys Meyers, both of whom do a believable portrayal of their roles and create lots of depth to each character as well, which results in the audience constantly having conflicting opinions about them and whether they are ‘good or evil’.

This is a film that I will definitely revisit in the future and continuously watch to try and notice clues that I didn’t initially see. I kept thinking I knew what would happen next and then things would turn out very differently, which was one of my favourite things about the plot. There were plot twists upon plot twists.

I would 100 per cent recommend this film. It is so intriguing and suspenseful. A true thriller which will have you hooked right from the start!
