Daisy Dewsnap: Looking forward to the springtime

With the emergence of the glorious sunshine over the last few days, our regular columnist Daisy Dewsnap tells us what she loves about spring and why it brings her such joy...

As winter draws to a close, we’re starting to notice the first signs of spring.

Flowers beginning to bloom. The bare, leafless trees being scattered with fresh fragments of colour. The days becoming longer and the skies becoming bluer.

Carpets of bluebells and flowering thyme are beginning to form on the ground, the greys and browns of autumn now long gone.

The birds are retreating to their places in the trees to wake us up with their song each morning. Bees swarming into our gardens on the hunt for flowers.

Spring has always been one of my favourite seasons; it is a time of rebirth, new beginnings and fresh starts!

For this article, I wanted to list three of the things I love about spring and why it brings me such joy.

The first reason I love spring is because of all the beautiful scenery and blossoming flowers.

After being surrounded by the icy serenade of winter for the past three months, these sudden splashes of colour and vibrancy, pastels and soft hues that begin to appear all around us are so refreshing and uplifting.

The greenery and wild flowers that rise from the earth, greeting us in abundance and the most buoyant of crowds, are almost a promise of summer and a reminder that it’s just around the corner. The verdant landscapes are like an endless palette of greens and sun-strengthened grass, graced with clover and dainty flowers.

Another aspect of spring that I love is the weather.

As residents of Greater Manchester, we’ve all become accustomed to rainier and colder weather for the majority of the year.

So these first glimpses of warmer weather and sunshine feel so exhilarating and blissful!

We wake up to golden threads of morning sunlight streaming through our windows, welcoming the new day with open arms and already making our day feel ten times more productive and positive! I also love the occasional spring showers that arrive with this new season. The unpredictability of them, the dewy petrichor they leave behind and the gentle pitter-patter sound they make as they hit each surface is so calming and therapeutic.

The final things that I love about spring is the huge array of wildlife and nature that it brings in its wake. The dark silhouettes and skeletons of trees begin to bloom with bursts of green, the consistent sound of woodpeckers tapping and drumming on tree bark returns, frogspawn emerges in ponds, hedgehogs and dormice retreat from their hibernation period, queen bees frantically search for and collect as much pollen as they possibly can.

The earth seems to come back to life with a renewed sense of energy.

There are so many reasons to love spring! And March is almost here so it’s time to start thinking about and remembering all of the things that we love about it!

It can’t come soon enough this year, certainly for me and I’m sure many others agree as well, so I’m looking forward to the longer days and ethereal scenery which will be with us very soon!
