Daisy Dewsnap: Everyone was colour-blind when we were winning

Our regular young columnist, Daisy Dewsnap sheds a light on her feelings after the racist outbursts directed towards members of the England squad after the Euro 2020 final.

Following the recent events in football a couple of weeks ago, there was a sudden surge in racism when the England team didn’t win the final of the Euros.

Not only were the players ambushed and attacked with abusive, racial comments on social media, but some people also tried to make statements through their actions which was apparent when the mural dedicated to Marcus Rashford was vandalised.

It horrified me to see all of the hate messages they were sent. After such a roller-coaster of emotions throughout the match I couldn’t understand how some individuals had managed to bring race and skin colour into the reason for us losing.

These men have put all of their effort, blood, sweat and tears into their sport only for them to be completely humiliated by so-called ‘fans’.

All three of the players who were mainly targeted had so much pressure on them to make our country proud and rather than cheering them on and accepting how far they had taken us through the matches, people decided to hurl vile racist comments and abuse at them.

I saw many articles and posts across the media reminding people that Saka is only 19 years old, implying that due to his age he shouldn’t be subjected to any of this disgusting abuse. But NO ONE should be subjected to this. No one at all.

No matter what their race, age, sexual orientation or gender, there is no room for hate crimes or cruelty. Nobody deserves it.

Everyone was colour-blind when we were winning, but colour only came into it when we lost to Italy.

Regardless of the outcome of the match, they gave their all. Nobody would have wanted to win more than the team on that pitch and to come off and instantly be subjected to so much racism and hate is completely intolerable.

Race absolutely shouldn’t be brought into it. It angers and saddens me that while we’re calling ourselves a developed, modern society there remains some who feel that it is acceptable to treat others with such disrespect and cruelty.
