Council issues update on restrictions at Dukinfield Crematorium

Dukinfield Crematorium.

Tameside Council has confirmed that the number of mourners allowed at services and ceremonies at Dukinfield Crematorium is to remain capped at 20 "for the time being".

The government has announced that it would be lifting restrictions on funeral attendance from Monday 17 May but there will be no changes to social distancing requirements.

The council say the continuing need for people to stay two metres or 6ft 6ins apart means the cemetery chapel is unable to increase its capacity.

In relation to burials, it will be possible for more than 30 mourners to be at the graveside after 17 May, but social distancing will have to be adhered to at all times.

A Tameside Council spokesman said: “It’s perfectly understandable bereaved people want their family and friends around them at such sad times, and those same friends and family want to offer their support and sympathy.

“The lifting of restrictions is a positive move but we have to carry on with social distancing. That means 20 mourners is the most we can accommodate at Dukinfield Crematorium if we are to comply with the guidance in place.

“We’re urgently seeking clarification from the government with regard to the implementation of changes and all the measures that need to be taken into consideration.

“Hopefully, it won’t be too long before funerals in Tameside – burials and cremations – have all restrictions lifted and attendances can return to pre-pandemic levels.”
