Community spirit lives on after despair at centre break in

Hattersley Community Garden were left reeling last week after discovering there had been a break in at the premises with vital equipment taken and, horrifically, one of the hens killed.

Dez Clare, Chairman of the CIC says he returned to the garden to find that all the bags of compost had been stolen at some point last Tuesday night, including seeds, pots and canes.

“But worse is the fact that they killed one of our tame hens that we use to educate school children about food and life in general,” Dez explained. “They had broken its neck. It would have offered no sport to them as they run towards you and not away from you.”

The team have informed police and have been given the names of those responsible, but it won’t now bring back the stolen equipment.  However, in a community-spirited move, local residents have set up a JustGiving page to help them get back on track.

Businesses have also clubbed together to help, with B & M Harpherhey Management raising £50 for them to spend at the Hyde branch to replace the missing compost.

“Community spirit is alive and well on Hattersley, thankfully,” Dez added.
