Charity builds school in Syria

A Denton-based charity helping children in Syria has opened a primary school for some 400 displaced youngsters at a refugee camp.

Syria Relief has opened the school for children at the Mahmudli camp. It means the hundreds of children, who have fled their homes elsewhere in Syria, will now get an education.

For some of the children it will be the first time they have ever received an education, while for others it will be the first time they have attended school in three to four years.

Syria Relief, whose global HQ is on Market Street, Denton, now operate 55 schools across Syria, although the danger of air strikes is always a reality and four have been hit since April.

Syria Relief’s Chief Executive, Othman Moqbel, said: “It is another proud day for Syria Relief, from our HQ, via our world-class network of aid workers throughout Syria, we are able to open another school for Syrian children so desperately in need of an education.

“This conflict has been going on for nearly nine years now, and most primary school children only know a life where conflict is the norm. When these children are out of school their life chances suffer drastically.

“We’re asking the people of Greater Manchester, throughout the North West and the UK to help us build the next school, which is desperately needed, as over two million Syrians are out of education due to this awful conflict.”

Syria Relief have posted a heart-warming video celebrating the school opening on their social media: https://www.facebook.com/syriareliefcharity/videos/2394813650633201/.
