Celtic survive on last day of the season

Stalybridge Celtic can look forward to another season in the Evo-Stik Premier Division after beating Grantham Town 1-0 to secure their status on the last day of the season

Evo-Stik Premier Division

Stalybridge Celtic 1-0 Grantham Town

Celtic's last day survival bid was a successful one. Knowing a victory would guarantee them safety for another year, aN Andy Scott goal was enough to keep Celtic in the league and to fight another day. With a boisterous home following behind them Celtic started well. Neil Kenghi with two glorious chances to score. Firstly he tried to lob the keeper when clean through only for the keeper to read it. Before failing to finish his second attempt after good Celtic build up.

Then hearts were in mouths at the other end when a misplaced back pass by Smalley was intercepted, but thankfully for Celtic Abeybayo-Smith put his shot wide after pressure from keeper Paddy Wharton. Right on half time Celtic got that all important goal. Accrington Stanley loanee Andy Scott found space at the edge of the box and hit a low rasping effort to the far post. It evaded everyone and nestled into the net. A huge goal in the history of Stalybridge Celtic.

The second half was a tense affair as Celtic tried to see the game out. But knowing that Mickleover Sports were winning their game meant any slip up by Celtic and they would be relegated. Tension grew as the game stayed at 1-0. Grantham asserted pressure but Celtic defended superbly, limiting the visitors to half chances. Upon the final whistle a huge sense of relief and joy spread through Bower Fold. A turbulent season off the pitch, ended with a positive on the pitch. Simon Haworth's debut season at Bower Fold has been a roller coaster of emotions, but one the Celtic faithful will be hoping can be built on.
