Caring volunteer has 100 reasons to smile

Pictured is Elsie Smith as she celebrates her 100th birthday.

Birthday cards have been sent by the dozen to a caring volunteer who turned 100.

Elsie Smith has dedicated decades of her life to supporting local causes and has been an active member of Mossley Cancer Committee.

To thank Elsie for her hard work and celebrate her 100th birthday, Margaret Brooks, a member of the cancer committee, collected cards from people all over Mossley.

These were gifted to Elsie after her birthday at a socially distanced get-together, as she celebrated the official day at her daughter’s home in Sheffield.

Margaret added: “I had people at my door with cards who I don’t know, but they wanted to do something for Elsie.

“I think that shows just how much influence she’s had in the community and what a magnificent supporter of Mossley she is.

“One of my strongest memories of Elsie is at a party we held for the Queen’s 90th.

“Everyone over 90 got a crown to wear and Elsie wouldn’t take her’s off.

“We just made such fun and happy memories together.”

Mossley Cancer Committee has reached a milestone birthday of its own, turning 50 in 2020.

This month is the end of their financial year and despite the restrictions of the pandemic, they’ve raised £15,000 for cancer charities in Tameside.

The year before, they raised £16,000, and the committee has been astounded by the generosity of people during the pandemic.
