Banim begins Ashton United rebuild

Ashton United manager Jody Banim has started to re-build his squad following relegation to the Evo-Stik Premier Division.

Winger Connor Hughes joins the club with a wealth of experience, having played in the National League with Halifax Town. During his time with the Shaymen, Connor helped the club win the FA Trophy at Wembley Stadium. Connor also spent time with Curzon Ashton last season, although his time on the pitch was cut short by injury. In a bid to regain match fitness, Connor spent time on loan with Atherton Collieries and helped the club to the Evo-Stik West title.

Upon signing for the club, Connor told Ashton’s media team: “Yeah I’m buzzing and delighted to sign. There’s a lot going on as everyone knows. so I’m delighted to sign and get it done early. I had a good time at Curzon and wish them all the best, but I think there’s a lot going on here and it’s a big project and I want to be a part of it.

“I bring pace, goals and assists – just a direct way of playing football.”

Experienced goalkeeper Jon Worsnop has also put pen to paper, along with defender Gianluca Havern, who returns to the club having previously played for the Robins.

A number of key players from last season have also committed to next season. Liam Tomsett, who made 30 appearances and scored five goals, will be donning the red and white jersey next season, along with midfielder Sam Sherridan, who made 33 appearances and scored four goals. Other recruits include Aaron Chalmers and Casian Anghel.
