Ashton tram line set to close for essential maintenance

Metrolink passengers are being warned that the Ashton tram line is set to be closed for six days for essential maintenance works.

The works from Sunday 20 to Saturday 26 March will focus on replacing old tracks at Piccadilly Station tram stop in the undercroft area under the main Piccadilly railway station.

A replacement bus service, with like-for-like frequency, will be in place with clear signage on where to go.

In addition to this, there will also be essential maintenance works taking place at the tram tracks at Piccadilly Gardens outside Primark.

As a result, trams will not run through Market Street, Shudehill or Piccadilly Gardens, and trams will be diverted via the second city centre crossing routes via St Peter’s Square and Exchange Square.

Passengers will be able to visit a dedicated travel advice page to find information on alternative travel options to help plan journeys in advance. Metrolink staff will also be around at key locations at busier times to assist.

Anyone not using Metrolink but who may be driving this weekend is also being reminded about the deferred Mancunian Way closure

TfGM’s Head of Metrolink, Daniel Vaughan said: “We’re very sorry for the inconvenience we know this closure of the Ashton line will cause but will be doing everything we can to minimise disruption by running a like-for-like replacement bus service.

“The works to install new rail track will be condensed into one six-day closure, rather than a number of shorter, more disruptive closures over different weekends, and extra staff will be placed in key locations and at key times to help people get around or answer any questions.

“I’d encourage customers using the network to plan ahead and allow extra time when making their journey.”
