Ashton man fined and banned from driving for a year

A 21-year-old man from Ashton has been banned from driving for a year and fined, after being caught using a mobile phone whilst driving and having no insurance.

Anthony Morris, of Sycamore Crescent, was given a 12-month driving ban and must also pay £1,000 in fines after appearing at Stockport Magistrates' Court.

He was charged with having no insurance and using a handheld device whilst driving.

It's in relation to an incident which police say happened on the evening of Monday, November 4, 2019.

A blue Vauxhall Corsa made off from police on Kings Road in Ashton and was abandoned on Wellbank Avenue.

Morris was stopped by patrols conducting a search of the area.

During a search of the abandoned vehicle, a Sainsbury's receipt was found.

Enquiries at the service station revealed CCTV footage showing Morris driving the Vauxhall Corsa on to the fuelling station forecourt, filling up with petrol and then driving off again, whilst using a mobile phone.
