All the candidates standing in the local elections

The local and mayoral elections are due to take place next month after the coronavirus pandemic forced a year's delay.

One seat in each of the 19 wards in Tameside is being contested on Thursday, May 6 with 67 candidates standing across the borough.

Labour holds the vast majority of seats currently up for election, with two Conservative seats also on the table.

In the last local elections in 2019, there was an upset as the traditional Labour stronghold of Ashton Waterloo was taken by Green candidate Lee Huntbach, who claimed the seat by 140 votes.

This year the Green Party are challenging all 19 seats in the borough.

They will be aiming to make political capital from public opposition to countryside development plans, including the highly controversial Godley Green Garden Village plans for land in Hyde.

This election also sees the Hyde wards as the mostly hotly contested, with the largest number of candidates standing in Hyde Godley ward.

However this may see the vote split, as Tory candidates have also been campaigning against the Godley Green plans.

The Liberal Democrats are fielding five candidates this year, followed by Reform UK – the rebranded Brexit Party – with three candidates.

The hyper local Stalybridge Town Party are fielding one candidate in Stalybridge North.

However there will be no appearance, as in previous years, of the Monster Raving Loony Party at this election.

Several incumbent councillors are standing down, including Pauline Hollinshead in Ashton Waterloo and veteran Labour member Brian Wild in Dukinfield, who has served on the council since 1994.

A number of front bench councillors are also seeking to defend their seats, including Labour cabinet members Ged Cooney and Leanne Feeley, and Conservative group leader Doreen Dickinson.
