Over 150 mature trees are to be planted along Mancunian Road and Lancaster Road before March 2020 thanks to Team Denton South, Tameside Council and City of Trees.
Tameside Council was successful in its bid to the City of Trees charity to continue planting mature trees along the grass verges of Mancunian Road and Lancaster Road. The charity is running the Urban Tree Challenge in association with Defra.
Cllr George Newton said: “this is incredible news — I’m absolutely delighted. Not only will this improve the environment, prevent localised flooding and help tackle air quality, but our streets will look so much brighter and greener!”
George added: “studies have also found that urban wildlife flourishes and residents‘ health and well-being improves.”
George has also secured a commitment from New Charter Housing to ‘match-plant’ mature trees on Yew Tree and Circular Road during the next planting season. For every tree that Tameside Council will plant on the estate, New Charter will also plant one. In the last 12 months, mature trees have been planted at the entrance to Yew Tree estate and on Circular Road.
Councillors George Newton, Claire Reid and Jack Naylor have long championed green issues in Denton South, ranging from improvements to existing green spaces through to campaigning against the unnecessary development of the Tame Valley in Bredbury.
The planting of 170 mature trees along Mancunian Road and Lancaster Road is due to start in the next few weeks and will be complete by March 2020.
