Weekend Review: Greater Manchester Cricket League

Once again, a full series of fixtures saw wins locally for Denton West; Denton SL; Flowery Field; Hadfield and Ashton.

In the Derek Kay Cup Final on Sunday there was a turn up for the book as Premier 2 outfit Shaw rattled up 303ao and then dismissed Premier leaders Prestwich for 160ao.

Premier:

There was no doubt about the individual performance of the day, and it came at Windsor Park lifting Denton West into fourth place. Callum Flynn, who fell for 97, agonisingly short of a century, and Uzzair Shah added 71 for the first wicket.  At that point Aaqib Uppal came in and with Flynn took West to 209.  Uppal went on to get to the three-figure mark, ending on 101 a West totalled an imposing 304-6 against strugglers Astley.  In the visitors reply Uppal came unto the attack as second change and Astley had no answer to him.  He took 7-21, one of the outstanding performances of the season as West won by 147 runs.

After three consecutive defeats Denton SL got back to winning ways at Egerton, as they successfully chased the home side’s 161-9, pro Damitha Silva getting 4-44. With a consistent display at the top of the order, (Liam Parkinson top scoring with 43), DSL eased home by four wickets with five overs to spare.

Moorside 76ao Prestwich 78-3; Roe Green 134ao Edgworth 135-5; Heyside 296ao Clifton 223ao; Denton West 304-6 Astley & Tyldesley 157ao; Woodbank 217ao Walshaw 138ao; Egerton 161-9 Denton SL 163-6

Premier 2

After two defeats Flowery Field kept the pressure on leaders Heaton with a seven-wicket win at Bury.  The home side fell for 144ao with Adam Bardsley and Bradley Edge each picking up three wickets.  The target proved no problem for Flowery who took only 32 overs as pro Shreevats Goswami ended up with an unbeaten 82.  In his debut season at Throstle Bank Street Goswami now has 836 runs and has helped Flowery to within sight of Premier Division status in 2023.

Glossop took advantage of meeting rock bottom Glodwick and eased relegation fears with a 116-run win. A steady display through the order, (Dom Perrin top scoring with 44), got Glossop to 208-9. Pro Matt Sonczak, (4-41), made the initial inroads in Glodwick’s reply and the job was finished by Perrin, (4-8), who made it a good day personally.

Bury 144ao Flowery Field 148-3; Heywood 149ao Flixton 69ao; Stand 56ao Shaw 57-7; Glossop 208-9 Glodwick 92ao; Heaton 202ao Bradshaw 133ao; Greenfield 86-4 Brooksbottom 82ao

Dukinfield and Mottram both lost.  Dukinfield faced a challenge as they visited leaders Elton.  They restricted the hosts to 183-9 as Syd de Silva shone with the ball, finishing with 7-41.   Dukinfield fell to 84-6 in reply, but with late resistance hauled themselves back into the game but eventually ended up just 10 runs short of the win.

Mottram failed to take the chance to increase the gap over Whalley Range who occupy the last relegation spot, and with Winton also winning, (over promotion hopefuls Royton), only four points separate the three clubs. Mottram set Whalley Range 160 to win after initially falling to 0-2.  Oliver Andrew, (50), led the recovery.  The Rangers, who have struggled throughout 2022, found some form and romped home by seven wickets as a five-man Mottram attack failed to make much impression.

Division 1

Stayley would have been hopeful of a repetition of the form which saw them beat leaders Saddleworth a week previously as they met a Hadfield side which has shown inconsistent from after a great start to the season. But it wasn’t to be.  Hadfield made 214ao with a fifth wicket partnership between Louis van Zyl, (48), and Cameron Ball, (74), being the cornerstone. Staley had little answer in reply.  Ball, (4-36), and Liam Doyle, (6-34), ran through them in just 18 overs as Hadfield won by 144 runs.

Droylsden, in second place, met Saddleworth and it was the leaders came out on top. After missing out for a couple of weeks Hashan Gunathila returned to form, getting 63 andbatting for 45 overs as he anchored an innings which finished on 183-6. Gunathila got three wickets when Saddleworth replied but the visitors romped home by five wickets with 17 overs to spare.  In doing so they increased their lead over Droylsden to eight points.  Austerlands, after a fine run, have moved into third place.  A defeat for Oldham this weekend will see the first relegation place confirmed.

Division 2B

Micklehurst went down for the ninth time this season and need a couple of wins to put any fears of a relegation battle behind them.  Taking on leaders Werneth they totalled only 138ao, quite a few below par on the high scoring Richmond Hill ground. It proved no problem for Werneth, who won by 6 wickets.  Their failure to capture a bonus point meant that Milnrow leapfrogged them into top place.

Denton fell again and must now be fearing a drop into the regional competition next year.  This time they visited Friarmere and set the hosts 184 for victory after seven batsmen got into double figures.  Friarmere were made to fight for the win as Denton reduced them to 129-7 but an unbroken eighth wicket stand of 56 finally got them home by three wickets with only seven balls to spare.

Denton West, in third place, are keeping the pressure on both Milnrow and Werneth for the promotion places after a comprehensive 97 run win at Glodwick, (Ryan Halpin 95; Jamie Williams 62; Harry Welsby 6-37)

Division 3E

Ashton made it 16 wins from 16 games, (the only 100% record in the GMCL), after a seven wicket win over Glossop, who had a decent start to the game at Rayner Lane reaching 100-3 with 17 overs to go. Ryan Heap, (4-20), then got amongst them and they set Ashton 135 for the win.  A couple of early wickets put Ashton on the back foot, but it was skipper Dan Hawthorne (opening in the absence of regular starter Richard Taylor), who played a captains knock taking Ashton to a seven-wicket win with an unbeaten 57.  Ashton now travel across town this weekend to meet neighbours Ashton Ladysmith who went down to Springhead.

The visitors to Rose Hill Road racked up 240ao with Saeed Nazeer, (5-69), making it 39 wickets for the season. Muhammed Waqar, (53) set the reply off at a pace but with wickets regularly falling Ladysmith eventually ended up 56 adrift.
