Weekend Review: Greater Manchester Cricket League

The tables after six weeks of the season make for good reading locally.  Both Denton West teams; Hadfield and Ashton’s 1st and 2nd XI’s top their respective Divisions and with Flowery Field and Droylsden sitting 2nd.

There was Cup action on Sunday which saw Droylsden, Dukinfield, Ashton Ladysmith and Micklehurst progress to the next round.

Premier:

Denton West maintained a 100% record – six games and six wins – and top the table after restricting Clifton, (who have underperformed this year after finishing third in 2021), to 91ao.  Uzzair Shah, (4-42), and Aaqib Uppal, (3-9), shone with the ball for West. Wickets fell regularly in the West reply, but they got over the line by five wickets with time to spare and will be looking for a seventh win as they make the short trip to Denton SL this Saturday.

DSL themselves would have been hopeful of a fifth win as they went to Heyside and reduced the hosts to 188-7.  At this point the game changed.  Tom Avery came it at no 9, and in a staggering display of hitting struck 15 maximums in an innings of 101 off 38 balls.  It enabled Heyside to finish on 300ao, with the 10th wicket adding 98 in only six overs.  The DSL reply saw a number of batsmen get starts but only Scott Kirwin, (52), made a sizeable contribution and the innings closed on 187ao, and defeat by 113 runs. Avery made it a sensational day personally as he ended up with 4-72.  The loss saw DSL drop to 5th place as Woodbank; Prestwich and Edgworth all won

Roe Green 87ao Woodbank 88-3; Egerton 163ao Edgworth 203-6; Prestwich 186ao Walshaw 146ao; Moorside 185-5 Astley & Tyldesley 184ao; Heyside 300ao Denton SL 187ao; Denton West 93-5 Clifton 91ao

Premier 2

Flowery Field are in a rich vein of form and made it five wins in six, securing second place in the table, as they emphatically brushed aside struggling hosts Glodwick, who remain pointless.  The home team had a bright start and reached 128-3 with 25 overs left.  Flowery pro Shreevats Goswami, (5-41), and Adam Bardsley, (4-33), then took control and Glodwick subsided to 159ao.  The Flowery reply was imperious as Owen Feakes and Ben Mason, (both finishing with an unbeaten 77), took Flowery to a crushing 10 wicket win with half the overs unused.

Glossop fell to defeat for the third time as visitors Shaw successfully chased the home total of 167ao.  Glossop will have been disappointed to not get more after reaching 87-2, but then saw four wickets fall for the addition of only 18.  George Dyson, (46*), showed some resistance after that.  In the Shaw reply they fell to 93-5, and with Matt Sonczac, (4-50) and Will Hargreaves, )4-31), keeping things tight a close finish looked on the cards.  And so it proved as the visitors got home by a narrow 2 wicket margin.

Heaton lead the table with a 100% record, with the season six games old

Glossop 167ao Shaw 168-8; Greenfield 166ao Flixton 172-3; Glodwick 159ao Flowery Field 160-0; Heaton 310-4 Brooksbottom 111ao; Heywood 195-8 Bury 182-9; Stand 115ao Bradshaw 137ao

Championship

For the second week in a row Dukinfield ended up on the wrong side of a very tight game.  Visiting Monton, they batted first and were immediately on the back foot falling to 26-3 inside nine overs. They rallied as pro Denuwan Rajakaruna and Syd De Silva got them to 74 but the loss of five further wickets for the addition of only five runs left them at 79-8.  They managed to reach 118ao and a routine win for the home side looked on the cards.  But Dukinfield made the hosts fight hard for the points.  De Silva, (4-36) and two wickets apiece for Jake Fenton and Joel Morton left Monton needing 10 from the last two wickets.  There was to be no further success and the defeat, (their fourth of the season) left Dukinfield in seventh place.

Mottram were looking for a third win in four games as they went to Royton. Mottram struggled to 136ao off their 50 overs, and this proved no problem to the home team who fielded Northamptonshire player Luke Procter, who returned to the Club where he came through the ranks. Royton cruised home by eight wickets with 18 overs to spare, leaving Mottram ninth in the table with two wins from their six games.

Whalley Range 58ao Woodhouses 208-6; Monton 119-8 Dukinfield 118ao; Royton 137-2 Mottram 136ao; Stretford 230-9 Westleigh 231-9; Elton 249-6 Winton 141ao; Swinton Moorside 155ao Friarmere 160-2

Division 1

Hadfield were beaten for the first time this season as they went down by four wickets on a trip to Droylsden, who are on a fine run.  Hadfield reached 65-3, (Lewis Jarvis 4-42).  At that point Hashan Gunalitha took the game by the scruff of the neck.  Hadfield added only a further 16 for the loss of seven wickets.  Gunathila was the chief destroyer, picking up 5-7.  Droylsden made hard work of the chase.  Needing only 82 they tumbled to 42-6, (Cameron Ball 3-35), before Sasiraj Pushparajah took them, home without further loss. Hadfield still top the table, but Droylsden’s win reduced the gap to four points as they advanced to second spot.

In a low scoring game at Oxford Street, Stayley failed by 11 runs to reach Edenfield’s moderate total of 135ao. Former Micklehurst man Amir Shahzad shone with the ball for Stayley taking 5-44. A patient innings from Callum Clayton, (44), gave Stayley a base but there was little significant support elsewhere. However, with 25 needed and four wickets left the odds were on the home team.  But within 19 balls they were dismissed, adding only a further 13, and the visitors took the winning points.

Droylsden 85-6 Hadfield 81ao; Uppermill 98ao Saddleworth 82ao; SW Manchester 240-6 Roe Green 2nd XI 130ao; Stayley 124ao Edenfield 135ao; Thornham 204ao Oldham 149ao; Golborne 143ao Austerlands 211-7

Division 2B

Micklehurst and Denton met at Richmond Hill with both teams looking for an improvement in fortunes.  Denton batted first and were indebted to Alex Beeley for their total of 187ao.  In a disappointing campaign for the Egerton Street club Beeley has shone with the bat and his 86 took him within sight of 400 runs for the campaign.  Rizwan Hussain, (5-31), put in a decent stint with the ball for Micklehurst. The key to the Micklehurst reply was a second wicket partnership of 83 between Daniel Clayton, (53), and Tom White, (57).  Despite 4-31 for Denton’s Phil Eaves, it was Hussain who took them within sight of the winning post which was accomplished by two wickets with eight overs to spare.

Denton West 2nd XI top the table and kept their 100% record after a 72-run win at Milnrow, (Ben Lowndes 54, Harry Welsby 4-23).

Denton SL 2nd XI 93ao Werneth 293-8; Oldham 2nd XI 201-8 Greenfield 2nd XI 139ao; Littleborough Lakeside 142ao Wythenshawe 144-8; Milnrow 100ao Denton West 2nd XI 172ao; Friarmere 2nd XI 114ao Glodwick 2nd XI 131ao; Micklehurst 192-8 Denton 187ao

Division 3E

There was an Ashton derby at Rayner Lane, and it went the way of the home team as Ashton maintained their 100% record with a 97-run win over town rivals Ashton Ladysmith.  The home team batted first and after a quick start reaching 77 in 10 overs, pro Ruman Ahmed, (63), notched his second consecutive half century and was aided by a well-timed 60 from Ahasan Shahzad.  It left Ashton finishing on 243-8, setting Ladysmith just 4.5 an over for the win.  A patient start in reply saw them reach 44 before the introduction of Josh Gee, (4-18), gave Ashton the breakthrough.  Ladysmith added another 102 against an Ashton attack which used eight bowlers.  The 97-run win leaves Ashton leading the table eight points ahead of Heyside who won a thriller at Werneth.  Mottram continued their good form posting a fourth consecutive win, beating Heywood by eight wickets.
