Weekend Review: Greater Manchester Cricket League

The season is now four weeks old, and the tables are beginning to settle down and give an initial indication as to which teams will be challenging for silverware and those who may already be concerned at the southern end of the tables.

There are some interesting games this Saturday and the T20 competitions are now in full swing with nine of the local clubs in action on Friday evening.

Premier:

Denton West maintained their 100% record and are only being kept off top spot by Woodbank by the small margin of four bonus points. Their latest win came as reigning champions Prestwich visited Windsor Park. A real feature for West this season has been the batting contributions from the lower order and so it was again. After being reduced to 134-7 the last three wickets added 80 and gave a decent total to defend. A four-man West attack proved up to the job with Jordan Williams, (4-60) and Caleb Daniels, (3-25) taking the honours as Prestwich fell 53 short.

Denton SL had been crushed by Woodbank seven days previously but returned to winning ways on a visit to Roe Green. Batting first the dismissal of pro Damitha Silva, (who top scored with 44), left DSL at 129-5 with 17 overs left. Like neighbours Denton West the tail wagged, and DSL finished on an imposing 246-7. The hosts got off to a decent start in reply, but three wicket hauls for both Silva and Jody Clough left them with too much to do and the innings tailed off to 183-9, leaving DSL the victors by 63 runs.

At the foot of the table Walshaw remain winless and have found things hard going after promotion last year.

Egerton 147-9 Clifton 148-2; Denton West 214ao Prestwich 161ao; Moorside 106-4 Walshaw 105ao; Woodbank 169-3 Edgworth 166ao; Heyside 65ao Astley & Tyldesley 100ao; Roe Green 183-9 Denton SL 246-7

Premier 2:

There was a local derby at North Road as Glossop met Flowery Field. Both teams came into the game having won two of their first three fixtures, and this time it was the visitors who came out on top. Flowery batted first, and got off to flyer as Owen Feakes, (38), and Ben Mason, (89), took them past the 50 mark inside eight overs.  Mason proved the anchor and was supported by Keegan Taylor, (39), and pro Shreevats Goswami, (31), as they ended up on 237-9.  Matt Sonczak and Dom Perrin picked up three wickets each for Glossop. The home team tumbled to 37-4 in reply, (Mike Finan taking 3-25), and there was to be no comeback as Adam Bardsley, with 5-36, wrapped up proceedings, leaving Flowery winners by 106 runs.

Greenfield 148ao Bradshaw 325-6; Heaton 175ao Shaw 89ao; Heywood 190ao Brooksbottom 101ao; Bury 130ao Flixton 131-3; Stand 107ao Glodwick 67ao; Glossop 131ao Flowery Field 237-9

Championship:

Dukinfield travelled to Royton hoping to pick up a third win but came up against prolific pro, Chirag Khurana in prime form.  In his second spell at The Paddock, the Indian had already notched nearly 300 runs in the three games so far, and on Saturday he added another 147.  It enabled Royton to finish on 241-6, meaning Dukinfield had a chase at just under five runs an over.  Pro Denuwan Rajakaruna took 3-58.  Dukinfield put up a really good effort in reply as Syd Da Silva, (73), and Rajakaruna, (89), added 161 for the fourth wicket. They both fell within six runs leaving a target of 40 from eight overs with five wickets left. It was just too much as they fell 16 short of the win, but a fine effort nonetheless.

Mottram have found the elevation to Championship level a real challenge.  They had a torrid afternoon at Woodhouses as home pro, Majid Majeed put them to the sword.  He came in with score at 40-1 and totally dominated proceedings, finishing with an unbeaten 163, as Woodhouses ended on 312-3. A shell-shocked Mottram simply had no answer in reply as they tumbled to 105ao, (Josh Butler 6-16).  The win left Woodhouses heading the table, leading Royton on net run rate.

Swinton Moorside 188ao Westleigh138ao; Elton 182-6 Friarmere 179ao; Whalley Range 166ao Winton 182ao; Monton 141ao Stretford 144-7; Royton 241-6 Dukinfield 226ao; Woodhouses 312-3 Mottram 105ao

Division 1:

Hadfield continue to lead the way as they travelled to Golborne and picked up a fourth win and maintained their 100% record. The key to their 197-8 was 45 from Cameron Ball and a fine century from Jonny Tranter, (102). Golborne have had a tough start to the campaign, and their pursuit of the target fell apart as they collapsed to 41-4.  Ball and Louis Van Zyl each picked up 3 wickets as Hadfield ran out easy winners.  The margin of victory was 70 runs.

Droylsden lost on the opening day but made it three wins on the trot as they crushed Roe Green 2nd XI.  Batting first they fell to 23-3. Jackson Purchase, (73) was backed up by excellent contributions throughout and after his departure some hard hitting from the lower order added 71 in 10 overs, Safri Ashraf starring with 51. In the reply Lewis Jarvis, (3-8), reduced the visitors to 19-4, and with the wickets shared around four other bowlers Roe Green folded for 48.

Stayley took on Saddleworth at home and built on their win seven days previously.  In a low scoring game they edged over the line by three wickets. Saddleworth reached 147ao, Dario Seale, (4-29), playing a big role for the Oxford Street team.  When Stayley fell to 43-6 in reply the odds definitely favoured the visitors, but Mike Jones, (28), Nick Woodhead, (32*) and Seale, (27*), dug in and took them home for the loss of only one more wicket.  Stayley also enjoyed success in The National Village Cup on Sunday when they travelled to Halkyn in North Wales.  It was an unlikely victory as they fell to 27-8 but were rescued by 72 from Faisal Hussain.  The total of 110 was too many for the hosts as they fell 37 adrift.

Division 2B:

Micklehurst picked up a second win as they overcame Greenfield 2nd XI at home.  The visitors ground their way to 166-5, (Shamar Marshall 3-52).  Micklehurst showed more urgency in their reply and despite the regular fall of wickets got home with 20 overs to spare, Rizwan Hussain top scoring with an unbeaten 63.  On Saturday they visit a resurgent Werneth and will be looking to dismiss the Coppice pro, Dildar Shahzad, early.  Shahzad has picked up centuries in the last two games.

Denton improved on their poor performance the previous week but still went down as they visited Glodwick 2nd XI.  The home team totalled 211ao, three wickets each for Phil Eaves and Tom Stenson. In the reply Stenson led with 54, but with only Sam Neill, (48) making a meaningful contribution they were all out for 178, 34 short of the winning post.

Denton West 2nd XI lead the table and had a fourth win as they ran riot against Littleborough Lakeside, racking up 332-7, with half centuries for Jamie Williams, Matt Burton and Ben Lowndes. At the other end, and just across town, Denton SL remain winless.

Division 3E:

Ashton kept up their 100% record and continue to pick up bonus points as they hosted second placed Heyside 2nd XI and won by 78 runs.  The key to the Ashton total of 225-7, was a sixth wicket partnership of 117 between skipper Dan Hawthorne, (51) and Ahasan Shahzad, (60). Heyside reached 77-3 in reply and an interesting game looked on the cards, but a couple of wickets put them on the back foot and Hawthorne made it a fine day personally as he finished things off, taking 4-4, as the visitors fell away.

Ashton Ladysmith have been on the wrong end of a couple of close games, and it was the same again as Glossop 2nd XI visited Rose Hill Road. Glossop got to 229-9, Waqar Nisar putting in a fine spell and finishing with 5-49. Paul Reynolds and Imran Khan both topped 40 as Ladysmith replied and they fought all the way, but eventually ended up 29 adrift.  They will be hoping for better fortune on Saturday when they travel to Springhead who have had a similar start.  Both teams have just a single win from their opening four games.

Dukinfield 2nd XI are chasing Ashton at the top, and they had a fine win after totalling only 101ao.  Royton 2nd XI had no answer to Gary Clarke who took 5-22 as they were routed for 54ao.
