Teams are up for the cup

It’s only a year ago in the initial stages of the first lockdown that we enjoyed weeks of unbroken sun.

Sadly, at that point cricket grounds lay idle with the truncated season not starting until the end of July. Grounds remained unused again last Saturday, but this time it was the weather which had the last laugh. The GMCL Board made the sensible decision, in light of the forecast but also because the Covid rules in place do not yet allow use of changing rooms, to abandon the scheduled programme for the day. There is as yet no indication as to whether another date will be set aside to complete this round of fixtures.

However, on Sunday things were initially better and the first stages of the 1st XI Cup competitions took place. But rain in mid to late afternoon led to many of the games being settled on the Duckworth Lewis calculation and a handful (including Micklehurst and Dukinfield), where the game had not progressed sufficiently to allow even that. In those cases, the tie was settled by a bowl out. A couple of fixtures in each competition have been deferred. Stayley, who were due to play Winton were otherwise engaged in the National Village Cup but sadly exited at the first time of asking as they visited Northop Hall in North Wales

Derek Kay 1st XI Cup

Three of our local sides were in action, with a 4th, Denton SL, getting a bye in this round. Up at North Road Glossop hosted Flowery Field, and the visitors posted 195-4 in their 45 overs. Mike Finan, (51); Keegan Taylor, (65) and Owen Feakes all made half centuries and left Glossop with a challenging target. They had made good progress, reaching 102-2 with 20 overs left when the rain arrived. With no respite, and Glossop being ahead of the DLS par score at that point they progressed into the next round which will be on June 6th.

It was Aaqib Uppal’s day at Windsor Park as Denton West entertained Clifton, a division higher in the structure. He made 45, and was aided by Liam Kilburn, (49), and George Hill, (42) as West’s recovered from 113-6 to reach 214ao. The Clifton reply was interrupted by rain and when the players were able to return the revised target was 179 to win from 27 overs. Uppal routed them, picking up 6-13, as the home team eased into the second round by 53 runs, with Clifton finishing on 125-9.

Bury 169-8 Monton 183-8; Walshaw 153-5 Woodbank 164-3; Glossop 102-2 beat Flowery Field 195-4 (DL); Denton West 214ao beat Clifton 125-9 (DL); Heyside 151-2 beat Swinton Moorside 198-7 (DL); Brooksbottom 112-6 beat Greenfield 121ao (DL); Heywood 238-2 Bradshaw 135-9 (DL); Astley & Tyldesley 219-5 Royton 218-4; Stand 87ao Moorside 88-5; Westleigh v Egerton (16/5); Woodhouses v Glodwick (16/5); Whalley Range v Edgworth (31/5); (Byes: Denton SL; Prestwich; Roe Green; Flixton)

1st XI Championship Cup

Six local clubs began the day hoping to progress, and join Ashton, (who received a bye), in the next round. At Oakfield, a local derby between Droylsden and Hadfield saw the home side reach a more than decent 198ao. Patrick Muthu with 47 top scored for Droylsden, and a couple of useful late order contributions formed the basis of this. There were 3 wickets each for Sam Whiteman and James Jones in the 7-man Hadfield attack. In their reply Liam Doyle, (68) and Richard Tranter, (54), in a second wicket partnership of 80 in 15 overs, set Hadfield on the way to a comprehensive win. Which was achieved with time and 7 wickets to spare.

Visiting Richmond Hill, Milnrow, (from a Division higher than hosts Micklehurst), reached 215-6. Sean Quarmby held the Micklehurst attack together, finishing with 6-34. With the clouds gathering the home side set off at a pace and had reached 72-1 from 11 overs when the rain arrived. No further play was possible, and the game was settled by a bowl out.

It was more of the same at Dukinfield. They had enjoyed a good afternoon with the ball as visiting Elton limped to 103ao, with 6 bowlers taking wickets. Dukinfield lost a wicket to the first ball of the reply and fared little better in the 38 balls that followed as the reached 18-3. With the game delicately balanced the elements had their say, and with no further play possible, and less than 20 overs bowled it reverted to a bowl out in which Dukinfield came out on top.

Denton, visiting Golborne would have been hopeful after reaching 179ao, in which they were indebted to Usman Malik who anchored the innings ending with 81. But they had no answer to the Golborne line up who reached the target in 20 overs and lost only a single wicket in the process.

Mottram were scheduled to visit Heaton but at the time of writing no details of the outcome were available.

The next round will be on June 6th with the draw to be made in the next few days.

Droylsden 198ao Hadfield 199-3; Dukinfield 18-3 beat Elton 103ao (bowl out); Heaton v Mottram (N/A); Uppermill 38-0 Tottington 37ao; Micklehurst 72-1 beat Milnrow 215-8 (bowl out); Deane & Derby v Werneth (N/A); Wythenshawe v Shaw; Littleborough Lakeside dnb lost to Edenfield 150-6 (bowl out); Adlington 194ao lost to Austerlands 179-1; Golborne 182-1 Denton 179ao; Friarmere v Oldham (16/5); Winton v Stayley (16/5); SW Manchester v East Lancs PM (23/5); (Byes: Stretford; Thornham; Ashton)
