Round-up: Greater Manchester Cricket League action

For the second weekend in a row, the weather played a part, leaving many games in the Greater Manchester Cricket League unfinished.

The local highlights were league wins for Glossop; Stayley; Mottram; Dukinfield; Droylsden; Ashton and Ashton Ladysmith.

There was disappointment as Dukinfield went down in the Championship Cup Final but elation for Ashton on a record-breaking day at Springhead

1st XI Championship Cup Final

Dukinfield, in prime form in the league, faced Shaw in the Final, which was held at Mottram. Sadly it was rain interrupted with three breaks in the Dukinfield innings. The breaks did not help with building momentum, and also left them open to the vagaries of the DLS calculation. After falling to 61-5 they were rescued by Qasim Ghafoor, (35), and an unbeaten 51 from Neil Mistry. It left them on 185-8, and after the calculators had been out the Shaw target was 181 from 35 overs. Denuwan Dadallage picked up three wickets and when Shaw were reduced to 135-6 with 7 overs left the odds were on the silverware being taken back to Higher King Street. Shaw kept chipping away but the dismissal of pro Sandakan with 14 required and only 2 wickets remaining gave Dukinfield renewed hope. The game went down to the last over but it was Shaw who won the day. Dukinfield will be disappointed but they are in the race at the top of Division 1 with plenty left to play for.

Premier 1:

Prestwich opened up a 4 point gap at the top of the table as they managed to compete a win over Woodbank, (in the only completed game in Premier 1), and followed it up with a win over Egerton on Sunday. Denton SL fell victim to the elements as they visited Glodwick and ran up an impressive 295-9. Liam Parkinson got things on the right track with 52, but they fell to 105-4. The innings was given real impetus by Scott Kirwin, (63), Matt Sonczak, (84), and BenTighe, (33), who added 184 between them, which left Glodwick a stiff task, at 6 runs an over. They never got the chance as rain arrived and the innings did not start. Denton SL have a game in hand, against Roe Green, which is not scheduled until early September so it looks as though the title race will go to the wire.

Moorside 40-1 Astley & Tyldesley 167-9 (aban); Heyside 293-7 Clifton 103-1 (aban); Egerton 149-2 beat Roe Green 194-7 (DLS); Greenfield 76-3 Flixton191ao (aban) ; Glodwick dnb Denton SL 295-9 (aban); Prestwich 301-7 beat Woodbank 142-8 (DLS); Sunday: Egerton 159-9 Prestwich 165-3

Premier 2:

Glossop were the only local team in Premier 2 to finish the game, and it ended in a win as they chased a DLS target of 117, after Royton had posted 219ao, (Will Hargreaves 4-20). After the loss of an early wicket Harry Dearden, (73*) and Oliver Kenyon, (25*), took them home. The win was a boost for Glossop’s hopes of beating the drop. With Monton and Royton already doomed, the remaining place now looks to be a really tight contest with five clubs split by only four points.

Denton West remain firm favourites to take the title despite an abandoned game against Bury. Only the first innings was completed as West reached 166ao. They had reached 86-2 with just under half the overs left but failed to push on from there.

Flowery Field suffered the same fate. Batting first they ended up with 212-9, and that after falling to 45-5. Ben Mason, (50) and Nick Eastwood, (85) rescued matters, putting on 146 for the 6th wicket, but the weather intervened before visitors Stand could start their reply.

Denton West 166ao Bury dnb (aban); Glossop 117-1 beat Royton 219ao (DLS); Bradshaw 97-7 lost to Walshaw 233-5 (DLS); Monton 103-2 beat Woodhouses 118ao (DLS); Heywood 103ao Edgworth 33-0 (aban); Flowery Field 212-9 Stand dnb (aban); Sunday; Monton 177-8 Edgworth 181-4

Championship:

Stayley are a mere three points above the drop zone after a mixed weekend which saw them overcome derby rivals Uppermill on Saturday but then falling to Friarmere in a nail biter the following day. Visiting Uppermill they finished on 190ao with Jake Barlow top scoring with 48. Chris Ware, (4-44), made the early inroads in the reply, and together with Chris Tipper, (3-20), they saw off the hosts for 87 - a victory by 45 runs after the target had been reduced to 132. On Sunday, with rain interruptions Staley ended with 123-8, (Whitwam 53), off 30 overs. The Friarmere target was set by DLS at 107 off 28 overs, and they were well set at 52-1 with 18 overs left. Whitwam then stepped in and ran through the hosts, taking 5-13, and reduced them to 94-9. The game went to the last over and Friarmere eventually got home by the narrowest of margins with a ball to spare.

Edenfield 188-8 Friarmere 187ao; Elton dnb Swinton Moorside 199ao (aban); Uppermill 87ao Stayley 190ao; Winton 44-0 Brooksbottom 169-7 (aban); Heaton 28-1 Westleigh 175ao (aban); Shaw 202ao Whalley Range 72-1 (aban); Sunday: Friarmere 107-9 beat Stayley 123-8 (DLS)

Division 1:

It was a successful day for Droylsden; Mottram and Dukinfield who beat not only the opposition but also the weather. At the top Mottram saw visitors Adlington reach 200-6, (Oliver Andrew 4-50). With a rain interruption their target was reduced to 119, and with Alex Birch, (45) leading the way they achieved that inside 17 overs. The win sees Mottram needing 10 points to secure promotion and they will also be hopeful of the title.

However, Dukinfield are chasing them with some purpose, and stand only 3 points behind after dismissing hosts Denton for 93 and getting home by 5 wickets. Denton saw only 2 batsmen reach double figures, as Oliver Davy Day took 5-20. After a decent start, Dukinfield lost four wickets for six runs, but the victory came in the 19th over leaving them in good heart for the following day’s Cup Final.

It was a similar low scoring game at Droylsden, with the home team dismissing Hadfield for 93 in a slow innings which used 39 overs. The wickets were shared around a 4 man attack. Droylsden lost 4 wickets in reaching the winning post – a victory which took them out of the relegation zone, but with 5 teams split by only 9 points and 2 relegation places to avoid, (with Milnrow looking doomed despite a win over Oldham), both Denton and Droyslden need a strong end to the campaign in order to ensure Division 1 cricket next season.

Droylsden 94-4 Hadfield SA 93ao; SW Manchester 81-2 beat Prestwich 2nd XI 82ao (DLS); Denton 88ao Dukinfield 90-5; Milnrow 134-2 beat Oldham 208ao (DLS); Stretford 112ao Austerlands 166ao; Golborne dnb Thornham 177-9 (aban); Mottram 119-3 beat Adlington 200-6 (DLS)

Division 2A:

Daisy Hill 242-4 Tottington SJ dnb (aban); Deane & Derby dnb Irlam 198-8 (aban); Stand 2nd XI N/A Worsley; Roe Green 2nd XI 93-0 Elton 2nd XI 92ao; Hindley SP 39ao Radcliffe 40-1

Division 2B:

Micklehurst were thwarted by the weather. Batting first against Glossop 2nd XI they finished on 232ao. Daniel Clayton opned and gave Micklehurst a good base with 50 but it was Rizwan Hussain who starred finishing on exactly 100 off just 49 balls. He now has 624 runs, avaeraging 69, added to which he has taken 27 wickets and has been a key component in their excellent season. The Glossop reply was stopped at 43-2. However, with Werneth getting a win, and leaders Saddleworth picking up 2 points it is looking unlikely that Micklehurst will be able to capture the single promotion spot that is available.

It was been a troubling campaign for Ashton but Saturday provided the brightest spot as they ran riot at Springhead. Skipper Dan Hawthorne added a steady 44 after the loss of early wickets but it was simply James Edmondson’s day. He thrashed the Springhead attack to the tune of 177, (with 13 boundaries and 17 maximums), and in doing so smashed the record for the club individual score. Ashton’s final total of 389-8 was also a club record and it proved all too much for the shell shocked hosts who collapsed to 57 all out, leaving Ashton victors by 332 runs.

Denton SL 2nd XI 52-3 Wythenshawe 110ao (aban); Saddleworth dnb Glodwick 2nd XI 252-0 (aban); Whalley Range 2nd XI 182ao Werneth 260-4; Micklehurst 232ao Glossop 2nd XI 43-2 (aban); Littleborough Lakeside 284ao Denton West 2nd XI 214-8 (DLS); Springhead 57ao Ashton 389-8

Division 4E:

Ashton Ladysmith had no trouble in beating Blackley who were left to chase at nearly 6 an over after Ladysmith ended on 268-8. The ever reliable Richard Taylor started things off with 64 and then Paul Reynolds added an unbeaten 71. Blackley had no answer to the home attack with Saeed Nazeer, (6-17) starring as Ladysmith ended up winning by 196 runs after a DLS revised target.

Woodhouses 2nd XI 167-4 beat Denton 2nd XI 183ao (DLS); Ashton 2nd XI 149-7 beat Droylsden 2nd XI 153ao (DLS); Stayley 2nd XI 206-5 Saddleworth 2nd XI dnb (aban); Ashton Ladysmith 268-8 beat Blackley 54-9 (DLS); Austerlands 2nd XI 97-1 Failsworth Macedonia 96ao; Sunday: Ashton 2nd XI 63ao Woodhouses 2nd XI 159-7
