Robins rebuild continues

Ashton United manager Michael Clegg has continued to build his squad ahead of the 2020/21 season.

Re-signing for the Robins are defender Jono Hunt and midfielder Chris Rowney, who initially joined the club last summer after making the switch from local rivals Curzon Ashton.

The duo enjoyed many successful years with the Nash and helped the club rise from the Northern Premier League first division north, to the National League North. Before leaving the Tameside Stadium, the pair also helped the club win the Manchester Premier Cup after beating Mossley 3-1.

Midfielder Liam Tomsett has also agreed terms for next season, whilst striker Ben Hardcastle is also staying.

On Hardcastle’s signing, Clegg said: “Ben came in under big pressure last season with the situation we were all in. Im just looking forward to him being himself next season and being the player us staff believe in so much. He is great footballer who’s work ethic is infectious.”

Defender John Lufudu is also staying put. Clegg said: “John impressed me the most last year. I came in and I was blown away by his performances. If we can work on a couple of things in pre season, we have a right player on our hands”

The club are also on the lookout for volunteers. The groundsman is looking to get a team of volunteers together for grounds maintenance. There are lots of jobs to do to get the stadium up to some order before any start date on the football. He needs help during the week or on a Saturday morning until at least September.
