Robins Flying The Flag In The FA Cup

Ashton United are in FA Cup action this weekend as they host National League North side Spennymoor Town to Hurst Cross.

The Robins are flying the flag for Tameside as the only team still playing in the competition from the region. A win would also be a healthy boost to Ashton’s finances with the winners receiving £11,250 and they would then only be one game from the first round proper.

Ashton have had an upturn in form recently following a poor start to the season which saw the Robins without a win from their opening six games. But Ashton come into the game on the back of a 4-0 demolition away at Grantham Town in a win that Ashton fans sensed was due on the back of their recent performances. Goals from Sam Sheridan, Connor Hughes, debutant Jordan Slew and an own goal secured a vital win for Ashton which was the first time the two have played each other since Ashton’s play-off final win in 2018. The only negative for the Robins was an injury to winger Connor Hughes but Jody Banim will be hoping he is back for the FA Cup clash.

Ashton’s opponents Spennymoor Town have been less than impressive so far this season with the club currently sitting in 17th place with 13 points from 11 games. Spennymoor are unbeaten in their last five however with their last game resulting in a 2-1 win at home to Kidderminster.

Ashton will be buoyed by the last time they face Spennymoor with The Robins winning 3-0 at Hurst Cross back in April.
