REVIEW: Saturday's Greater Manchester Cricket League action

With the weather as it was on Saturday, a full programme would have been expected but after news of a positive Covid-19 test on a spectator at a game the previous weekend, the games involving Droylsden, Ashton and Denton West were cancelled in line with instructions from the ECB.

In the games that did go ahead, the honours locally went to Micklehurst and Moorside who retained their 100 per cent records. Jonny Forrester and Imran Khan have been in fine form and their runs have been key to the success of the two teams. Locally there were wins for Woodhouses; Denton; Hadfield; Micklehurst; Oldham; Saddleworth; Moorside; Greenfield; Shaw and Ashton Ladysmith.

Division A

In a low scoring game at North Road, Woodhouses came out on top, and preserved their 100 per cent record, despite setting Glossop a very moderate 114 for the win. Only 3 batsmen got into double figures in the game. Will Hargreaves took 5-26 for Glossop, but in their reply it was Josh Butler with 5-14 who ran through the hosts, leaving Woodhouses winners by 46 runs.

Flowery Field struggled to 106ao against Denton and without 41 from Mike Finan the Denton target would have been far fewer. Shahzad took 4-13 for Denton. In the reply Keegan Taylor came in with only 15 balls gone. It was his unbeaten 37 that was integral to taking Denton home by 6 wickets, despite 3-36 from Finan.

Results: Glossop 67ao Woodhouses 113ao ; Flowery Field 106ao Denton 111-4 ; Denton West v Denton SL (cancelled)

Division B

Hadfield made it two wins out of three as Richard Tranter, (58), helped them to 145-8 against visitors Dukinfield. It was a decent recovery after being 45-5. A poor start to the Dukinfield reply left them at 25-4 as Liam Doyle and Bobby Hirst pegged them back. Sam Whiteman, (4-17), then stepped up, and with only three Dukinfield batsmen reaching double figures they fell 42 short, being dismissed for 103.

Results: Hadfield 145-8 Dukinfield 103ao ; Ashton v Werneth and Mottram v Droylsden (both cancelled)

Division C

Micklehurst were in the runs again, and with Jonny Forrester getting his second century of the season, (108), they piled up 282-6 against Springhead. It was far too many for the visitors as they fell for 99, Lewis Daniels and Stuart Chamley taking 3 wickets each. The Richmond Hill side therefore retained their 100% record.

Austerlands found runs hard to come by yet again, and struggled to 68ao in 37 overs against Oldham, with the wickets shared amongst 6 bowlers for the Pollards team. A couple of quick wickets in the Oldham reply put Austerlands back in the game, but they eventually went down by 4 wickets and remain winless.

In the derby at Leefields, visitors Saddleworth posted 174-8 against hosts Uppermill. The key to the game was an unbroken 9th wicket partnership between Daniel Hesford, (55*), and Imran Lodhi, (41*). David Roberts took 5-24 for Uppermill but their reply tumbled to 36-6 in the face of a fine spell from Muhammed Shakir, (6-11). They eventually finshed on 95ao, leaving Saddleworth winners by 79 runs.

Results: Uppermill 95ao Saddleworth 174-8 ; Micklehurst 282-6 Springhead 99ao ; Oldham 69-6 Austerlands 68ao

Division D

Heyside and Moorside came into their encounter with 100% records so far. Heyside had found runs easy to get this season, ut this time struggled against Jack Gartside, who finished with 5-31. Moorside look to be a strong outfit, and they took only 25 overs to get home, winning by 5 wickets with Imran Khan finishing on 50*, which took him over the 200 run mark for the season.

Greenfield picked up a first win of the season against previously unbeaten Glodwick. Chris Gill, (83), played the key role in the Greenfield total of 189ao, (Arkam Zeer 4-17). Glodwick never really got going and Kartik Joshi, (5-29), played the key role in Greenfield’s 84 run win.

Royton remain winless after Shaw ran through them for 110ao. Royton made the hosts fight for the win as they picked up 6 wickets, but a half century from Lincoln Roberts gave Shaw the points.
