Quarless signs for Celtic

Stalybridge Celtic have signed a giant of non-League football in 6ft7ins striker Josh Quarless.

He joins from City of Liverpool after netting 19 times last season, including twice against James Kinsey’s side.

“When we put together our list of targets for next season, Josh was absolutely top of the list,” Kinsey told Celtic’s website. “When he became available, we acted quickly to ensure we could sign him, and we are delighted to have managed to do that.”

His arrival should free up Darius Osei and last season’s top scorer, Aaron Dwyer, to add extra width.

“The one issue we had last season was that we never really had a 9 that we could play into. When under the cosh, it is difficult to get out if your centre forward can’t hold the ball or bring others into play.”

Quarless, who has also represented Runcorn Linnets, 1874 Northwich, Widnes and Burscough, began his career playing in the Liverpool Sunday League for the likes of FC Dovecot and South Sefton.

“I’m delighted to sign for such a big club,” he said. “After speaking with the gaffer, it was apparent about the ongoing project and what the ambitions of the club are.

“I can’t wait to get started and help this club get back to where it belongs.”

Stalybridge host FC United and Hyde United in pre-season friendlies at Bower Fold next month, before the Northern Premier League West season kicks off on August 10.
