PREVIEW: Tuesday night's football matches

Four of our local teams are in action this evening with league points and places in the Integro League Cup second round at stake.

In League Two, Oldham Athletic will be looking for just their second league win of the season when they make the long trip to north Lincolnshire, to take on relegation rivals Scunthorpe United in a crucial battle at the bottom of the table.

The Latics are 20th in the table with six points from their eight league games so far - three places and two points better off than their opponents in 23rd, who are one point above bottom-club Stevenage. Following Bury's demise, only one team will be relegated to the National League at the end of the season.

Three points for Laurent Banide's side, who have drawn their last two league matches 2-2, would be a massive boost in their bid to move up the table. But the Iron, managed by former Shrewsbury Town boss Paul Hurst, come into the game on the back of their first league win of the campaign, after a comfortable 3-0 victory over Morecambe at Glanford Park.

Meanwhile, the Integro League Cup gets under way with two of our teams involved in first-round ties.

Droylsden will hope to return to winning ways away at Radcliffe Borough after their five-game unbeaten run came to an end at the weekend, when they lost 4-1 at home to Pontefract Collieries.

Dave Pace's Bloods are still fourth in the BetVictor North West Division and will face a team who sit bottom of the league above - the Premier Division - with just two points from four league games so far.

Elsewhere, Mossley travel to Merseyside to face Division One West outfit City of Liverpool at the Berry Street Garage Stadium.

The Lilywhites will be buoyed by Saturday's 2-0 home win over leaders Workington, which moved them up to sixth in the North West Division. Prior to that, they had lost 3-2 in successive games - going out of the FA Cup to Widnes and suffering defeat at struggling Pickering Town.

And finally, in the North West Counties First Division South, New Mills will be looking to secure their first league points of the campaign when local rivals Cheadle Heath Nomads visit Church Lane.

The Millers have lost all six of their league games so far and are bottom of the table but, despite the results, optimism is high following the recent arrival of Mike Norton and Dave Birch as joint-managers.

Three new players could make their debuts after signing in the build-up to the game. Defender Adam Jones has joined after leaving Mossley, while former Curzon Ashton midfielder Ryan Shenton and ex-Mossley winger Nathan Ntalu have also joined.

Meanwhile, Nomads have taken seven points from as many league games and are just three places higher in 17th, so a victory for the Millers would be significant in closing the gap on their opponents.

The visitors have lost their last two matches - against Sandbach and Vauxhall Motors - but are likely to have several faces familiar to New Mills fans in their ranks. These include Ashley Stott, who appeared for the club in the Evo-Stik League Division One South, NWCFL Premier Division goal-scoring sensation Leon Grandison, and George Blackwell who appeared for the Millers in more recent seasons.

The match was originally due to be played last month but was postponed due to the Whaley Bridge dam incident.
