Mason to leave Curzon after seven years at the Tameside Stadium

Curzon Ashton goalkeeper Cameron Mason is set to leave the club after spending seven years at the Tameside Stadium.

After signing for the club in 2014, Cameron trained alongside former goalkeeper Hakan Burton and found it difficult to establish himself as a first team regular.

However, following Hakan’s move to Colne in 2017, Cameron, who is Curzon’s longest serving player, became the number one choice at the Tameside Stadium and became fans’ favourite both on and off the pitch.

His standout performances between the sticks were rewarded with a call-up to the England C squad in March 2020, however the timing coincided with the outbreak of Covid-19 and the shot stopper was unable to fulfil a dream. We spoke to him at the time about his selection (see video)

Chairman Wayne Salkeld also praised Mason.

Outside of first team duties, Cameron has spent time training the club’s youngsters and also made a sizeable donation to the NHS amid the coronavirus outbreak.

Alongside supporter Glyn Jones, Cameron came up with the idea that for every clean sheet he kept, Glyn would donate £10 to a charity of Cam’s choice. The shot stopper, who started his career with Oldham Athletic before moving to Chesterfield in 2013, also donated £100 of his own money to take the amount to £255.

Curzon made the following announcement on their official Twitter account: “The Club can confirm agreement with the Manager and @Cam_Mason1 to release him from his contract at the end of the season.

“Everyone at the club wishes him well in his ambitions to play full time and thank him for everything he has contributed in his time at Curzon”.
