Local teams have finals in their sights

The Inter Club Knock Out competitions organised by the Manchester and District Alliance and the Manchester and District Ladies Golf Association are the biggest of their kind in the country. 

Now it is getting to the later stages of them and the teams left in the hunt are looking at the possibility of making their respective finals days. 

Saddleworth Ladies Bell Cup team are one of the furthest on and they are through to the quarter-finals of the MDLGA Bell Cup after wins over Ashton, Oldham and Davyhulme Park. 

They await the winners of the Leigh v Davenport tie and if they win that they will make finals day at Wilmslow. 

Our other local team still in the competition are Blackley who visit Leyland in the quarter-final. 

In the Manchester Alliance City Glass Mens Foursomes Saddleworth are still in the mix with a tie at Haydock Park looking to get them through to the last eight and Blackley need to win at Disley. 

In the Archie Preston Mixed Foursomes Fairfield led by Lady Captain Sandra Southern (pictured) and ex Captain Stewart Proffit (pictured) enjoyed a great win at Blackley and now have a home derby tie against Oldham. 

Also in the mix are Denton at home to Whitefield and Crompton and Royton, who host Blackburn. 

The premier Alliance knock Out is for the Dunham Forest Trophy and the only local team left in are Brookdale, led by pro Karen Heywood and they host Hazel Grove. 

Looking to reach the last eight in the Williams BMW Junior KO the local hopes rest with Denton v Rossendale, Haydock Park v Brookdale and Crompton and Royton v Leyland. 

In the Seniors KO Blackley are the only local team left in and they face a tough trip to Rochdale to make the quarter-finals.

Saddleworth ladies played the Francis Smith qualifier and Elizabeth Pugh won with an incredible 55 from Jo Jacombs 61 and Jean Dervan 66. 

The 9-hole Stableford was won by Jenny Knight after a cpo on 19 with Rosemary Brierley. 

A Stableford for Saddleworth’s men had both divisions led in with 43 points by Stuart Hanson and Paul Bolger and a Pro’s BB Medal was won by Chris Cunniffe and Darren Smith with 58 from the experienced duo of Tad Knebel and Nick Marner 60. 

A Three Man Reverse Team Waltz for Ashton’s Seniors had the hot trio of M Easthope, S Gaynon and G Allen dancing home with 82 points from J Hindle. F Turner and C Robinson 76. 

The Commemorative Cup play-off at Ashton saw R Lomas and M Easthope win in the comfort zone of 58 from D Lawton and G Taylor 66. 

The same hot pair won a BB Stableford with 48 points from President S Baxendale and D Sharkey 46. 

Ashton ladies were in medal mode and Alison Dean led in with 68, three less than Pamela Pearson. 

Brookdale ladies played round two of the Brookdale Cup and Valerie Brogan was first past the post after a cpo on 67 with Jane Sampson. 

The latest Pro’s Stableford for Brookdale’s men was won by Peter Lloyd with 39 points from Paul Wood 38 and John Hughes and Trevor Mayo, both 37. 

The latest Captain’s qualifier for Dukinfield’s men was led in by Luke Pitman with 64, one less than Phillip Schofield and Robert Lee. 

Duki ladies played for the Ladrose Trophy and Kath Stafford was a proud winner after winning a cpo on 40 points from Beverley Harrop. 

Crompton and Royton ladies were also in’major’ action for the Marks Trophy and in a tense finish Gail Taylor won a cpo on 68 from Elaine Burston, one less than Audrey Whittaker and Jean Clarke. 

A midweek Stableford for C and R’s men had the divisions topped by Wayne Hurst 42, Brian Stafford after a cpo on 38 from Gary Lamont and Stephen Wright 38. 

The latest Green Blazer medal at Fairfield saw Darren Schofield top division one with 64 from Sam Lunt 66 and in division two John Paton was on top with 65. 

The John Turner Trophy, for 55 years and over, at Stamford had David Salisbury winning a cpo on 42 points from Thomas Howe and David Pegg. 

Lady Captain’s Day for Stamford ladies had a runaway winner in Fiona Ibberson who posted a superb 65 to finish eight shots clear of Jo Akers and Marjorie Harrop. 

The Lady Captain’s prize for Denton’s men was won by Chris Moriarty from Stephen Gilbin and Reece Hobson. 

The Wednesday Stableford at Denton was won by Stephen Boy with 41 from Ian Lakin 38 and John Hathaway 37. 

A Denton Ladies Team of Three Waltz had Jan Farrell, Cathy Snowdon and Maureen Bailey showing neat moves on their way to a winning 74 points, one more than Lady Captain 

Norma Boott, Lana Mulhearn and Laraine Gordon with the 9-hole winner being Marie Oetting 17. 

Oldham ladies played their MDLGA Bunty Booth qualifier and Anne Rotchell will represent the club in 2022 after posting a winning 62, one less than Wendy Cash. 

Oldham’s men played round two of the Clegg Cup and in division one Mark Furnival won a cpo on 70 from S Ogden. 

In division two Duane Garfield was out on his own with 66, three less than John Kennedy and Geoff Proctor. 

It’s hotting up in the Oldham and District Rabbits League with just a handful of points separating the top three teams. 

Currently Houldsworth have the lead by four points from Brookdale and the latest results were: Stamford 3- Houldsworth 5, Oldham 4-Ashton 4, Brookdale 7- Dukinfield 1. 

League placings 1 Houldsworth 41, 2 Brookdale 37, 3 Dukinfield 36, 4 Ashton 30, 5 Oldham 22, 6 Stamford 18.
