Ian smashes target for Cancer Research UK

A local boxing coach who completed a 26 mile hike in aid of Cancer Research UK has thanked his friends and well-wishers for their support.

Ian Harrison, who coaches athletes at Droylsden Amateur Boxing Club, hiked the 26 miles around the Peak District on Saturday in memory of one of former friend Colin Heywood, from Droylsden Walking Football Club, who sadly passed away. Ian also had Craig Williams, the club's resident referee, in the back of his mind as he's currently undergoing treatment for cancer.

Ian, who won Coach of the Year at the 2017 Pride of Tameside Sports Awards, has smashed his initial target of £300 and has so far received donations totalling £662.

The trek started at the Bakewell Showground in the Peak District National Park, before travelling via the Chatsworth Estate, Chatsworth House, Lathkill Dale, Deep Dale, Monsal Dale & Trail, Headstone Bridge & Tunnel.

Ian's efforts to raise money continue this Friday with a coffee morning to be held at Droylsden Juniors FC. Proceeds will be donated to Macmillan Cancer Support.The event will run from 10am-12pm.
