Golfer Andy is flying high

Saddleworth’s long-running Winter League has come to an end, with the final standings at last confirmed.

Malcolm won the competition by one point with Simon Pickup in second with 41 and in the third spot with 40 points was Alan Ramsden who beat Mike Noble on a card play-off.

The delighted winner of the Saturday Winter League was Andy Li who finished clear of Jon Givvons, Gary Simpson and JB Platt.

Sunday’s event, a 4BBB Medal, was won by the previous week’s winners, new members Marvin Russell and Andy Schofield.

The duo were victorious finishing on -12 (Nett 59).

In second spot, just one shot adrift, was the pairing of Sean Mooney and Alan Dorrington and back in third finishing on net 60 also and losing out on a card play-off was Mike Keighery and Kenneth Shadford.

In division two, 37 was also the winning score posted by G Marsh, one more than J Collins, and Pete Davies won the Two’s pot.

l Antony Lambert is a serial bridesmaid at Ashton so often just missing out on winning competitions.

But the club legend ended his jinx in style in a Tuesday Stableford when he posted a scorching 41 points to cruise to victory in division one from John Dawber 36 and John Rice 33.

In division two, Michael McCarthy saw a massive 44 points taking him home from Andy Clegg 40 and Les Russon, Mo Akram and Robert Kenyon, all 39.

l The 12th Race to the Start at Brookdale was won by Steven Armstrong with a healthy haul of 43 points from Graham Brown 42, DB Taylor 40 and Mick Scrivens and Sam Kingham, both 39.

l A Stableford at Werneth produced some good scores led by Hugh Adams with 45 points from David Royle 44 and Terry Ogden, Lee Appleby and James Kenny, all 42.

l Stamford’s men were in singles Stableford action and in division one Jamie Chadwick led in with 39 points from Brian Thomas 37 and Andy Green and Shane Schofield, both 36.

Division two had Colin Kershaw in charge with 41 points from Daniel Cranmer 40, Michael Hewitt 39 and John Grainger 38.

l Many golf clubs, mainly through their Captain and Lady Captain’s charities in their year of office, have supported Francis House for many years raising many thousands of pounds to support them.

Now, Francis House desperately needs help to sell thousands of knitted Easter chicks with eggs.

Normally the chicks are sold in schools and businesses, but due to the current situation it looks like the charity will have thousands left over.

Each chick is filled with a Cadbury’s creme egg or similar. The chicks and eggs have been generously donated by thousands of supporters over the last few months.

If your business is still open and you are able to sell chicks for £1, please call the fundraising office on 0161 443 2200.

Individuals can also purchase chicks through the hospice website: www.francishouse.org.uk/get-involved/shop/online-shop.
