Glossop Rugby Club fundraiser proves a real hit

Glossop Rugby Club's fundraising golf day proved a real hit with all in attendance.

The event, which was held on Friday, October 16 at New Mills Golf Club, was very generously sponsored by Jeremy Unsworth Funeral Services, Glossop.

Eighteen teams signed up to the social event, some of whom were members of GRUFC, some from local golf clubs and others a mixture of invited friends, all who were keen to have a day in the fresh air and be reunited with friends old and new, especially as many of the usual rugby activities had been affected by the COVID 19 pandemic.

Sam Shaw, the golf pro at New Mills organised a multi tee start four ball Texas scramble, whilst taking care to adhere to all the current social distancing guidelines. After a breakfast muffin to start the day and with the sun trying to peek out from behind the clouds, the weather was dry and a lovely crisp Autumn day, as they all teed off.

Much laughter and spirited conversation could be heard from around the course and after a full afternoon of exercise and competitive golf, all the teams met up outside for a catch up, a pint or two, and a supper of lamb hot pot or chicken curry.

It was lovely to hear so many tall tales, shots won & lost, and to see so many smiling faces, as they all socially distanced inside and out, catching up on news and gossip!

Glossop Rugby Club is a very important part of the local community, and a fabulous hub for all the members and families to reach out to, lifting spirits and supporting all its members in so many ways. Rugby is at the centre of the club, but the true heart is the family that is Glossop Rugby Club. With senior men’s and ladies teams, a thriving mini and junior section training on Sunday mornings, the club has just celebrated 50 years since reforming in 1969 and continues to go from strength to strength. All new interested members are encouraged to come along to see what all the fuss is about and once in the club environment, people soon become lifelong friends & supporters.

Ongoing fundraising is essential, especially during these difficult times, to keep the rugby club going, and the next social event is a Sunday lunch, to be held on Sunday 1st November, 1-5pm. Please contact Matteo on 07858 243300 for further details. Check out the club website at www.glossoprufc.com or on Facebook.
