Excitement builds ahead of Glossop CC's new season

The 2020 cricket season gets underway at North Road, Glossop, on Saturday April 18th with a 2nd XI match against Ashton CC, followed by a 1st XI derby clash with old rivals Denton West one week later.

Entry is free and refreshments, including the bar, are available during games.

The crown green bowling season begins on March 30th with games on most days of the week – full fixtures to follow. New members are always welcome.  Bowling coaching is on offer on Wednesday evenings throughout the summer starting on April 22nd. The popular Friday evening junior cricket coaching will start on May 1st, at the biggest beer garden in town.

This year, the cricket section is sponsored by Plater Group, while the bowlers will enjoy the sponsorship of Williams Bros flooring specialists. Both these companies have offices on High Street West in Glossop.

The cricket section is also delighted to have partnered with Rochdale-based company Icon Sports, who will be the official kit provider for at least the next three years. In addition to that, the club has secured several new kit sponsors, with MDS Books, The Christie NHS Foundation Trust, SPE Resourcing and The Googly now accompanying Plater Group on Glossop’s playing kit for 2020 and beyond.

Glossop have entered the GMCL T20 competition for the first time, so this season will see local T20 cricket played regularly at North Road, with home games scheduled on either Friday evenings or Sunday afternoons. U13s fixtures will take place on Sundays, while other junior matches at U11s & U15s levels will be played in the evenings during the week. Junior practice for the aforementioned teams will be on Tuesday evenings and Seniors’ practice will be on Thursday evenings as usual. New playing members are always welcome to join the club via these sessions.

This year’s county fixture will take place on Tuesday May 26th, with Derbyshire 2XI and Durham 2XI clashing in T20 game, scheduled to start at 2pm. These same two counties will play a 50 over game on Sunday July 12th, this time at U17s level. The club is inviting sponsorship of these games.

The Bowling section will again be hosting the 2-day Top Crown Pairs competition at North Road after its huge success last year, bringing to our green the very top bowlers from all over the north-west, reflecting the high reputation of the club’s facilities on and off the playing areas – the first event of the season will be on Easter Monday April 13th, the annual Charity Fun Day starting at 10.30 am in support of Reuben’s Retreat – food and bar available all day, so come along to play or watch.

The cricket club has enlisted the services of two young overseas players for the new season, to enable Glossop CC to compete at the highest level of the Greater Manchester Cricket League. Mark Pearse, a South African wicket-keeper/batsman and Toby Dodds, a young Australian all-rounder, will both play a crucial role as the club looks to push for promotion and return to the top-flight in 2020. Oliver Kenyon will once again be 1XI captain, while Dan Senior takes over the role of 2XI skipper.

New players and non-playing members are always welcome at North Road. Membership includes use of the Members’ Bar and reduced rates on bookings of the upstairs function room for family occasions. For more information and booking forms, visit the club website or call the club’s contact number – 01457 865107. Senior & Junior cricket fixtures and all bowling fixtures will be available as soon as possible, on glossopcbc.co.uk or glossopbowlingclub.co.uk
