Encouraging sport for Tameside children

A brand-new online resource has been launched that will help more children in Tameside to get physically active.

Tameside Council are backing the work of The Active Recovery Hub. This initiative has been funded by the National Lottery and will provide schools, local authorities and families with free resources to encourage more children in the area to reach the recommended target of 60 minutes of activity a day.

Sport England have teamed up with the Youth Sport Trust in order to develop this resource after the government’s School Sport and Activity Action Plan. This plan promises to extend the School Games website to help teachers and parents to find opportunities for young people to compete and get active.

The new hub will be found on the School Games website and provides the ideal platform to get young people more active. Users can search for activities by age and by the time of day they would be free to take part, making it easily available to all.

More than 18,800 schools already take part in the School Games, while 38 sporting organisations have already provided content for the new hub, including a range of diverse activities.

The project aims to deliver local children with the information they need in order to be active in their daily routine, recover their wellbeing after the pandemic and re-engage in school after months away.

Chief executive of the Youth Sport Trust Ali Oliver has spoken on how the Active Recovery Hub will support schools after a detrimental year for education settings up and down the country.

“Teachers have so much on their plate at the moment and we want to make it simpler for them.

“With National School Sport Week just around the corner in June, the Active Recovery Hub and joined-up approach from the school sport and physical activity sector will be vital in supporting children to have fun and celebrate the life-changing benefits of play and sport.”
