Cricket given go-ahead to resume at three local clubs

Three local cricket clubs which were forced to shut following a positive Covid-19 case have been given the all-clear to resume on Thursday (13 August).

Droylsden, Ashton and Denton West, in the Greater Manchester Cricket League, were ordered last week to suspend 'all activity' for seven days - in line with instructions from the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB). 

It followed a spectator who had been present at three Droylsden matches testing positive for coronavirus. 

It meant that the clubs were closed and last weekend's senior and this week's junior fixtures were all cancelled. 

But the clubs received good news on Tuesday evening (11 August) that they have been given the go-ahead to reopen from Thursday, so cricket can resume with immediate effect. 

The Greater Manchester Cricket League also tweeted on Wednesday morning (12 August) to confirm the news. 

GMCL can confirm that clubhouses can re-open and cricket can recommence at @DroylsdenCric @ashtoncc2015 and @DentonWestCC after all clubs confirm a deep clean of their facilities has taken place. This follows last weeks decision to suspend activity taken by GMCL.

Secretary of Ashton CC, Martin Frost, commented: "This is really good news and will enable all our teams to get back into action.  It was disappointing to miss a week's cricket but we fully supported the action taken by the League. 

"We all have a responsibility to help minimise the spread of the virus, but having now been given the green light we can now look forward to our game at Mottram on Saturday."

Denton West will welcome Glossop to Windsor Road when they return to action in Division A on Saturday (15 August), while in Division B, Ashton will play at Mottram and Droylsden visit Hadfield.
