Commonwealth Games 2022: The success of our local athletes

Celebrations and joy, Commonwealth Games 2022.

The 2022 Commonwealth Games have been incredibly successful for not just Team England, but our local heroes in Tameside and Glossop.

Talent is plentiful within our boroughs. Inspired by dedicated teams and coaches, there is an indisputable passion for sport within our towns and villages, creating athletes who go on to earn international achievements.

This year, several resident athletes headed to Birmingham to partake in the Commonwealth Games, a particularly special Games that allowed British friends and family to flock the crowds.

Georgia Taylor-Brown was the first to take to the stage. The former Fairfield High School student and East Cheshire Harriers athlete has shown immense talent in recent years, dominating the world of triathlon.

Fiercely competing with fellow world talent Flora Duffy, Georgia flew around Sutton Park in the women’s sprint triathlon.

An undulating route testing even the strongest runners, Georgia stormed through the swim and bike to tackle an intense 5k course.

Earning herself a silver in this event just behind the Olympic Champion Duffy, Georgia said the race, ‘gave her goosebumps’.

Following on from this success, Georgia and the rest of Team England triathlon sailed through an unbelievable mixed relay performance to earn themselves a gold.

With Taylor-Brown in the fourth leg, she was given the perfect chance to finish a solid performance, something which she mastered effortlessly.

Scoring highly at both the Commonwealth and the Olympic Games, Team England and Great Britain have proven a force to be reckoned with in the triathlon scene.

Buxton swimmer Abbie Wood smashed her former expectations as she headed to the pool to earn a selection of medals.

The 23-year-old secured her place in the women’s relay teams, during which she powered down the lanes to finish in spectacular times.

Just missing out on a bronze medal last year in Tokyo, Wood was beyond pleased to come away from Birmingham with four fantastic medals, two silver and two bronze.

A strong force in the pool, Abbie has restored tons of confidence after a tremendous effort at the Commonwealth Games, confidence that she will see her flourish at future competitions.

Owning the men’s Paratriathlon, Dave Ellis and Luke Pollard cleared the rest of the field with ease to arrive at the top of the podium.

After his Paralympic chance was ruined by a snapped bike chain in Tokyo, this achievement was extra special for Ellis and his guide, Ashton’s own Luke Pollard.

Winning golds at World and European Championships, the pair now add Commonwealth champions to their list of achievements.

A flawless performance, Dave and Luke completed their powerful run in a time of 16:38, making for an overall time of 57:39.

Ashton’s Anthony Harding showed tons of skill and determination at his debut Games, making himself a rightful Commonwealth Champion.

Partnering with the gifted Jack Laugher, the pair performed difficult dives smoothly and retained their place at the top of the leaderboard from round one onwards.

Pushing themselves and choosing some of the most difficult dives possible, Anthony and Jack stormed to blow the competition out of the park.

Following on from their recent World Championships success, this is an excellent accolade for the team as they begin their virtuous partnership.

Struggling to make the team in previous years, Anthony was beyond proud to attend his first Commonwealth Games, inviting his supportive family to cheer from the crowds.

England finished with a record of 176 medals, 57 of which were gold, at Birmingham 2022, falling just behind the invisible Australia with 178 medals.

Inspiring, motivating and ultimately incredible, The Commonwealth Games have been electric for sporting fans across the nation. Giving viewers the chance to learn so much about new sports, this event has been a catalyst for encouraging the next generation to take up their passion.
