Amazones Taste Defeat In Penultimate Fixture

Sunny but with a chill in the air was how the Amazones were greeted by the weather on Sunday afternoon for their penultimate match of the season against Macclesfield on the hill at Glossop.

Good numbers for the Amazones were unfortunately not matched by the away team so they found themselves playing 11-a-side on a reduced width pitch.

Spirits were high and the game kicked off following a minute's applause from players and spectators in memory of Mandy Lawrence of UWE Ruby.

Both sides battled to gain an early upper hand. After about 10 minutes Macclesfield got the scoring under way with a nicely converted try. Lots more competitive play from both sides left it 0-7 to the visitors at half time.

The second half was just as competitive with an early try from Macclesfield followed quickly by a try from the Amazones. Macclesfield ended the scoring making it 5-17.

A closely fought match that could of gone either way throughout. Although a slightly disappointing result there were some outstanding moments of play from seasoned players such as Fiona Armstrong (player of the match as voted by visitors) and Lucie Turner, also from newly joined players like Lucy and Tan (awarded “Forwards of the Match”).

Special recognition to our newest player Alex who in her first ever rugby match was awarded “Back of the Match” after some awesome tackling and support play. Everyone put in a good shift and should all be very proud of their efforts. We now look forward to our last few weeks of training this season to iron out those last few aspects of our game before we play Stockport at home on April 24.

The Amazones are encouraging locals to come down and support them on the day as they host a Ladies' Day to celebrate women's rugby at Glossop and to unveil the women's honours board.
