Wild leaves Oldham for 'personal reasons'

Oldham Athletic manager Pete Wild has left the club for 'personal reasons'

Wild enjoyed two stints in charge of the first team last season.

He took the reigns following Frankie Bunn's dismissal after the 6-0 defeat at Carlisle United on Boxing Day. He guided the squad to a three game unbeaten run in League Two, before shocking Premier League Fulham with a 2-1 victory in the FA Cup third round at Craven Cottage.

Wild then went on to lose 2-1 at Macclesfield Town and MK Dons, before beating Crawley Town 3-0.

Despite his impressive record, Wild was replaced by former Manchester United and England midfielder Paul Scholes in February. Scholes' time in charge came to an abrupt end after just 31 days, and Wild was chosen to take control for a second period for the remaining nine games of the season.

He revived Oldham's playoff hopes with a good run but was ultimately unable to extend their season, instead being mathematically rule out of a playoff spot after a 1-0 defeat at Exeter in the third to last game.

The following statement was uploaded to the club's website on Tuesday evening: "The club would like to place on record a special thanks to Pete for his time and efforts recently as Head Coach, as well as his first spell in caretaker charge earlier in the 2018/19 season which included the memorable FA Cup victory at Fulham, in addition to his excellent work with the academy setup over the years."

On the departure, Owner Abdallah Lemsagam said: “Pete worked extremely hard for this club of which I am grateful for, but came to me today saying he wants to spend some time away from football.

“He’s a great guy, I’m sad to see him go and would’ve liked him to stay with the club but I respect his decision and wish him well for the future.”
