Weekend Review: Greater Manchester Cricket League

Premier Division Royton and Woodhouses, both winless before Saturday, met at Medlock Road knowing that one of them would get off the mark.  It was Woodhouses who did it in style.

Winning the toss they put Royton into bat and it was the right decision as the Paddock team fell to 39-4.  The score was doubled without further loss but then a collapse which saw the last six wickets fall for 18.  There were 3 wickets each for Alex Spender; Josh Butler and Nick Hardman.  There were no such problems for Woodhouses as they replied.  Matty Taylor, (38*), and overseas man Vincent Poller, (48*), took them home inside 17 overs for the most comprehensive of victories, a 10 wicket win.  Greenfield recovered from their defeat at Clifton seven days earlier as they took on Stand.  They totalled 221, batting first with a consistent display which saw sound contributions from all the top order, bar pro Yohan da Silva.  The Stand reply was in tatters at 36-5, (Adam Robinson 4-24), and despite a partial recovery from the lower middle order Greenfield came out on top by 80 runs, and in doing so now lie in 3rdposition. Denton St Lawrence, with a 100% record from completed games are top, and Flixton are in 2ndplace.

Flixton 286-6 Egerton 157ao; Greenfield 221ao Stand 141ao ; Monton 243-9 Clifton 130ao; Prestwich 177ao Woodbank 178-6 ; Roe Green 173-9 Denton SL 174-4; Woodhouses 96-0 Royton 94ao

Division 1A

Glodwick had the performance of the day locally in Division 1A.  They posted an impressive 271-9 against an Austerlands team who have found the transition to Division 1 cricket difficult and remain winless after this game. Glodwick pro Mohammad Mohsin is in prime form this year and made his 3rdcentury of the season.  There was decent support around him as Austerlands, who have yet to total more than 135 this year, were set a really challenging target. It proved well beyond them as they managed only 83 with Arkam Zeer, (5-10), doing the damage.  The win, Glodwick’s 4thof the season, leaves them sitting proudly at the top of the table, and looking forward with confidence to the trip to Brooksbottom this weekend. Uppermill came back to earth with a bang.  They lost not only their 100% record from completed games but also top spot as visiting Denton went home with a comprehensive win. Pro Ayaz Tazawar made 40 but there was no support as Uppermill limped to 104ao – an innings which occupied nearly 49 overs.  The Denton reply was far more confident and they got home by 7 wickets.  Uppermill will look to bounce back when they welcome Denton West to Leefields on Saturday.

Denton West 117-3 Glossop 114ao; Flowery Field 85ao Brooksbottom 64ao; Heywood 246-3 Unsworth 170-8; Glodwick 271-9 Austerlands 83ao ; Moorside 114ao Swinton Moorside 151ao; Uppermill 104ao Denton 106-3

Division 1B

Heyside, who had lost their unbeaten record in a very low scoring game at Walshaw the previous week made amends in style as they piled up a huge 370-6 against previously unbeaten Whalley Range.  Heyside fielded a sub pro, Sri Lankan Sachithra Serasinghe from Bacup and undoubtedly got more than their money’s worth.  He came in with the score on 24-1, faced 139 balls, hit 28 boundaries and 10 maximums, finishing with 210.  Ryan Barnes, (71) played a great part too, adding 271 in a 3rdwicket partnership with the pro. Late innings hitting left Whalley Range with a nigh on impossible task, and they subsided to 131ao, (Tom Avery 5-50), leaving Heyside the winners by 239 runs.  It pushed the Little Hey Street team to 3rdin the table.  Walshaw got their 4th win, and remain top after comprehensively beating Greenmount.

Dukinfield 129-4 Droylsden 128ao; Greenmount 147ao Walshaw 293-5; Thornham 158ao Astley & Tyldesley 267-9 ; Westleigh 68ao Edgworth 70-5; Heyside 370-6  Whalley Range 131ao; Stayley 304-8 Bury 303-4

Division 2A

Shaw had a sizeable win over Prestwich 2ndXI and cemented 2ndplace, just a point behind leaders Elton.  Batting first Shaw ran up 286 with the feature being 70 from Lincoln Roberts and 79 from Graeme Simpson.  There was great support for them throughout the order, with pro Dilanka Sandakan chipping in with 46. Prestwich had little answer to the Shaw attack as Tharsan Thayalan, (4-31) and Daniel Poole, (4-32), saw them off for 108.  The Werneth attack has suffered over the last two weeks. After conceding 400+ at Micklehurst seven days previously they spent a long afternoon in the field as Littleborough Lakeside, visiting the Coppice, piled up 299-5.  It proved far too many despite some resistance from Liam Brown, (41) and Werneth folded for 159.  They remain winless this campaign but have the chance to rectify that on Saturday when they visit fellow strugglers Elton Vale.

Division 2B

Friarmere maintained their 100% record from completed games with a win at previous leaders Edenfield and now stand 2ndjust a point behind leaders SW Manchester. They may have felt that 188 would be difficult to defend against an Edenfield team who previously lost only one wicket all season!! The Friarmere innings was based around Adrian Du Toit, (85).  When Edenfield reached 70 without loss it looked as though the game was going their way, but 5 wickets in 10 overs put Friarmere back in charge and they kept the pressure on for what was a 25 run win.  Ishtiaq Hussian, (5-51), was the key for them.  Oldham hosted Wythenshawe who have struggled so far and the game went the way of the form book.  Oldham set the visitors 241 to win, after a half century from Anees Rehman, and decent lower middle order contributions which gave them a decent total. Wythenshawe crumbled to 60ao, (Humza Naeem 4-33).

Deane & Derby 180ao  Denton West 2ndXI 184-8 ; Edenfield 163ao Friarmere 188ao; SW Manchester 149-4 Greenfield 2ndXI 147ao; Stretford 72-2 Tottington St Johns 70ao; Whalley Range 2ndXI 130ao Ashton 131-6; Oldham 240ao Wythenshawe 60ao

Division 3 East

The two local teams Saddleworth and Springhead occupy the top two places after Saturday’s games. Saddleworth were set 156 for the win by Werneth 2ndXI. Muhammed Faisal picked up 4-64 and then Asad Ali, (61*) made sure of the winning points. Having elected to drop into Division 3 with a view to rejuvenate the Club after losing players the move looks to have been a wise one.  Springhead successfully chased 211 for victory over Glodwick 2ndXI, Lee Bayliss picking up 5-66.  Springhead were in a hurry in reply taking only 25 overs to reach the target, thanks to a century from Jamie Dell.

Failsworth Macedonia made 293-7, (Ethan Shackley 76), against Heyside 2ndXI who got to 179-1 with 20 overs left.  Mark Barnes, (79) and Mark Ingham, (69).  However, it was a procession thereafter as 7 wickets fell for 21, (Richard Lyndon 5-24), and Heyside, who were understrength, tumbled to defeat. Newton Heath travelled to United Stars but their 86 proved no problem for the hosts.
