To market, to market

Dovestone WI was out in full force last Saturday with their Family Christmas Market.

They transformed Saddleworth Rangers Rugby Club into a glittering Santa’s Grotto and magical railway.

The event was held in aid of Oldham Mountain Rescue, who even sent along some helpers to assist the elves on the day.

Guests eager to see Father Christmas were led through the tracks past a number of ‘stations’ such as Candycane Lane on the ‘Rudolph Railway’ before meeting the jolly man himself in a cosy grotto.

The children were then tasked with feeding and looking after Santa’s ‘furry and feathered friends’, namely Archie the pony and Silas the Harris Hawk with his handler, bird of prey expert Luke Summers.

Families could then nosy around stalls celebrating local independents to pick up any last-minute Christmas presents, grab some hot food and drink, all while enjoying music from Delph Youth Band, Saddleworth Family Choir and Dobcross Band Club.

Dovestone WI president Jessica Moreland said: “The Christmas Markets were a storming success. After months of planning and preparing, such as making the goody bags, building the grotto at our Monday Meet-ups with everyone getting together.... we created so much magic.

“Every child felt important. We’re also pleased to support our local high street and keep it alive, which is very in-keeping with our ethos.”

Their event is made all the more impressive considering that Dovestone WI has only been in action since April, but now boasts over 85 members from across the borough and beyond.
