Six arrested after Oldham factory protest

Six people were arrested during a protest at a factory in Oldham on Monday (1 February). 

Activists from Palestine Action and Extinction Rebellion North sprayed the outside of the Israeli-owned Elbit Systems (Ferranti) factory, based at Cairo House in the Waterhead area, with red paint including the words 'Shut Elbit Down'. 

The protestors, some wearing red suits, chained the gates and blocked the entrance, whilst displaying banners which read 'Elbit Out Of Oldham' as well as condemning 'systematic misjustice'. 

It comes weeks after the factory's owner won a £102 million weapon technology contract with the British Army for new 'sensor to shoot' systems.

Greater Manchester Police have said that six people, aged between 20 and 40, have been arrested on suspicion of criminal damage and aggravated trespass. They remain in custody for questioning.

Greenacres Road was closed whilst the protest was happening.
