Oldham travel to Blackburn in Carabao Cup first round

Oldham Athletic travel to Blackburn this Tuesday (13th August) as they battle in the first round of the Carabao Cup.

Both teams will be looking for a win after their first two league games have ended in defeat. Oldham do have a win this season though as they beat Liverpool U21’s in their Leasing.com Trophy clash.

Latics will be heading to Ewood Park looking to right the wrongs from their last game which was a defeat at home to Crewe Alexandra who ran out deserved 2-1 winners. Following that game Banide said; "The performance is not enough. We lost against a good team, with better technique and physique, so we must accept and if we want to exist in this league we must push our level because for the moment it's not enough."

Facing a team two divisions higher it will be interesting to see what type of team Laurent Banide starts and whether he will have one eye on the next league game away at Bradford City. Blackburn’s last game was a 2-0 loss away at recently relegated Fulham as they look to go straight back up. Blackburn’s first game was a shock 2-1 defeat at home to Championship newcomers Charlton Athletic.

There aren’t any fresh injury concerns for Oldham as David Wheater could be fit to take part in the game following a knock which forced him to miss the weekend's defeat. Speaking after the Crewe defeat Banide was asked about Wheater’s injury to which he replied "David for the moment is injured, so we don't take a risk. He's very important in the team for the character, for the spirit but we cannot take risks with a player like that. "So we try with others. It's football, we must change when the player is not 100%, it's normal. We cannot take a risk and we never take a risk."

For Blackburn, they have some injury doubts. Tony Mowbray confirmed that Darragh Lenihan won’t feature in the game due to a knee injury. He also revealed that other players have ‘knocks’ but he didn’t state which players.

For most teams, the Carabao Cup might be seen as an inconvenience but the prospect of £5000 of prize money for the winner may make Oldham keen to get the victory and the confidence that comes with it.
