Mountain rescue team's warning to Saddleworth hill walkers

A mountain rescue team leader has once again advised walkers to "be prepared" before taking to the Saddleworth hills.

The move came after Oldham Mountain Rescue Team received a request from Greater Manchester Police on Saturday (5 March) for help locating a couple who had been out walking in the Dovestones area and became lost in the dark.

After using PhoneFine technology to establish their exact location on Ashway Gap, the team talked to them on the phone with advice to stay where they were and set hill parties en route.

Rob Tortoishell, OMRT leader, said: "The couple were cold and disorientated but in reasonable spirits. After a quick assessment and giving them headtorches and warm clothing, they were walked down to the waiting vehicles and given a lift back to their own car."

And he declared: "Although we are experiencing the first hints of spring with some glorious days to be out and about, the weather can turn in an instant in the hills, and the nights still draw in early.

"We'd encourage anyone heading out to make sure they're prepared with warm clothing and waterproofs. You should always take a torch, fully charge your phone, check the weather, and tell someone where you're going. Following this advice will help to ensure you make the most of any days out in our beautiful area."

Rob added: "As a rescue service we are happy to assist anyone in distress. We don’t judge our casualties and respectfully ask our followers to act in a similar manner. Let’s keep it positive folks."

Twenty OMRT personnel were involved for an hour and 25 minutes.
