Mayor's Ball raises fantastic amount for local causes

Oldham Mayor, Councillor Ginny Alexander, put the fun into fundraising as she staged a spectacular night at the Queen Elizabeth Hall last Friday night (February 28) to raise over £21,000 for causes close to her heart.

She welcomed around 500 guests to the annual Mayor’s Civic and Charity Ball, after sending out a personal borough-wide invitation for “real ordinary people like me” to attend, as well as dignitaries of the community - including the Civic Mayor of Tameside, Cllr Leigh Drennan.

The glittering event raised a magnificent grand total of £21,436.30, which will go to the Mayor’s Appeal Fund, supporting eight local charities.

Cllr Alexander - who is the first female Oldham Mayor to have a female Deputy Mayor in Cllr Jenny Harrison - has chosen to give a funding boost to Dr Kershaw’s Hospice, Mahdlo Youth Zone, Stephen Gartland Foundation, Christies at Oldham, RSPCA Oldham, TOG Mind, Pennine Pen Animal Rescue and Action Oldham.

Cllr Alexander, who was accompanied by her Consort and husband Adrian, said: "I want to thank all the people that sponsored, donated and turned up last Friday to make the Mayor’s Ball special. I could not have done this without your help. A fantastic night was had by all."

Guests were greeted with a champagne reception, followed by a four-course dinner prepared by the award-winning The White Hart Inn at Lydgate.

There was also live entertainment from Victor Michael and Ukrainian Dance Group, ‘Podilya. There was also a raffle and a tombola on the night.
