Shortly after 8.30pm, police were called to reports that a grey Vauxhall Antara had collided with a black Mercedes-Benz E200 on Burnley Lane, close to the junction with Parkway.

Police say the driver of the Vauxhall, a 57-year-old man, was taken to hospital where he remains in a critical condition.

The driver of the Mercedes remained at the scene to speak with officers and was not injured during the collision.

No arrests have been made and enquiries are ongoing, Greater Manchester Police have confirmed as they appeal for witnesses to the collision.

Police Constable Phil Drummond, of GMP’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “The driver of the Vauxhall remains in a critical condition and we have specially trained officers supporting his family at this difficult time.

“This collision happened on a busy stretch of road so I am hoping there will be a number of witnesses that can assist with our enquiries.

“If you witnessed the incident or have any CCTV or dash-cam footage that could assist with our investigation, please get in touch.”
